[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Oldest box of ammo in the house?

While organizing the ammo closet, I noticed a few boxes of .22's that I purchased 6/81. I always mark the box with the date of purchase. A couple weeks ago I shot up some boxes of 9mm that were 8/84.

That got me thinking who here has the oldest box of ammo?

I have a 1953 dated crate of Yugo 8mm, if that counts. It still shoots for the most part.

I have a bunch of "Remington Kleenbore Rifle Match" .22LR - box says "For use in match rifles only". Made in 1948. Also have several boxes of .222 Remington Magnum from 1963, and some Federal .38 Spl from 1965. Also, a couple of boxes of Remington 7MM Magnum from 1978.

Edited to add: I don't usually mark the purchase date on ammo when I buy it, but my dad always does....

Got quite a bit of 1800's stuff in my collection. Have lots of USA stuff (commercial) from from the 50's-70's. Have case lots of Milspec from 30's-40's...

Ive still got some Remington Core-lock, 30-06 and 30-30 from the early 70s, also have some Winchester 30-30 silver tips in a yellow box from I dont know when, but they were boxed under the Western name, for some reason they keep getting rotated behind the newer stuff

I've got a box of my Grandad's Western .25 Remington fodder with the bear from about 1940 or so.

Got some 9mm ball from 1946. Dirty stuff but the price was right. 30-30 from early 70's. that says how often I shoot the 30-30. My grandfather gave me 2 loaded mags for a 1911 that he said he had since the 40's. The mags still work, don't know about the ammo.

Still shooting some .30-'06 headstamped "DEN 42". In a 1942 Springfield Garand, no less. Great fun.

I forget where it came from, but I've got a small paper box of old ammo. It's a rimmed centerfire that's 2.5 inches long with a very slightly tapered shoulder. The bullet is about .42 caliber FMJ, but I'm not sure. The top of the box has a solid black star; to the left is a black stamp of a circle with CAPUA around the inside of the top half and 1892 across the middle bottom. One of the stamps on the front of the box says M. 1870/e. The head of the cartridge reads GD around the top of the rim and C-90 around the bottom. The primer appears to be copper. Any idea of what it is?

Edited to add: There are eight rounds total in the box.

Box of WWI issue 45 acp., also WWI dated rounds of 30-06, and 8mm Mauser. Have many boxes of 8mm Mauser dated WWII issue, and MP44 ammo dated WWII issue. Also have several various brand names of boxes of 12 ga. buckshot from WWII, some are paper others are brass hulls.

German WWII issue 8 mm Mauser. Very hot load, very corrosive primers.

I used to have some 1906 dated 6.5 x 55 Swedish. That was some good stuff. The age had tempered its velocity, and it shot very well in one of my old Swedes. Had one hangfire out of about 100 rounds - real scary HALF SECOND delay between firing pin fall and the "BANG!"

Got a couple of boxes of 1938 Camp Perry "Issue" match 30-06. Still sealed. I would love to hear some of the stories from those golden Days of Highpower shooting...

Kato- That's ammo for the French 1873 ordinance Revolver.. GD= "Gevelot Depose". (Gevelot Manufacture) Don't shoot it.

Oldest I have shot was some 1913 vintage 1911 ball.. Went bang quite relibly.

Thanks for the info Meplat! I figured this stuff was pretty old, but I had no idea what it was for. Don't worry; I never planned to shoot it, especially since I don't have any old French wheelguns!

My Dad has what he claims to be pre WWI .38 Special. I don't know if it is true, but the ammo is corrosive as all hell, and the case expands when fired making extraction difficult.

Same here- very hot, very corrosive, mega-recoil. My bro says it's great hunting ammo, though. Only two failures in 800 rounds so far.

Other than that, I have some 1960 SA .303 that goes (click-) bang....no failures in 300 rounds, and some goes bang faster than others...both are very accurate for what they are- unwanted ammo. Like the Yugo 8mm it is corrosive, so I bring along a thermos of boiling water and a funnel, whenever I shoot them.

WW2 AP 06,, shoots just fine also some recovered 06 from USS San Diego, powder still dry,,not sure if I would shoot it,,primers probably bad. have some 0's vintage 303 brit shit hang fires etc. garbage

Oldest stuff I got is some 30.06 AP dated
1953 . Right before they quit making it I think . Went to the .308 then .
Course I haven't had it that long .
My oldest that I bought new is probably
89 or 90 .
I do have ONE rd of black powder cartridge for my Spencer repeater . No date but probably from 1867 or thereabouts .
