Lets start by saying that the the gun in this situation is the same for all of the rounds. I was wondering what would be the straightest shooting round out there? It doesn't have to be a common round that can be easily found, because I plan on loading this on my own. So ballistically what is the best rifle round availible today? Thanks!

High ballistic coefficient + high velocity = flattest shooting. Bitchen names don't have any effect on the front side of the shooting bench.
.220 swift and 22/250 are 2 of the flattest. .243 isn't far behind in some loads.
6.5 x 284 Winchester cartridge loaded with 142 grain Senar bullets. Absolutely great 1000 yard rifle cartridge. Charles the Gunsmith.
22/250 is pretty darn flat. For more power (lots more!), 7mm Rem Mag is pretty flat too.
.204 Ruger, .223 WSSM, .25 WSSM
They're all almost duplicates of each other. Small, lightweight bullets (no more than 45grs.) going really damn fast. |
.17 remington, 204 ruger, 220 swift
for shorter ranges <300yds |
I know it sounds like i was jokin but Aguila sub sonic .22 are one of the most accurate rnds out there, check into it. You dont need speed to be accurate!
There are much flatter and much faster but I think the 300 Weatherby is one of the more senseable cartridges of this nature.
He asked for flattest shooting though, not most accurate. |

Any 6.5mm caliber. 6.5mmx08, (260 Rem) 6.5mmx06 or the one listed above. Surprised more of ya didn't know this. Mike |

It is hard to beat the .243 WSSM.....In the Winchester ballistic silvertip ballistics chart it is the flattest shooting round in any of the factory's loads.
I would say the 175SMK would smoke out of it. |
7mm remington utra magnum supposedly 3400 fps muzzle velocity 140 and 160 grain rounds
.30/378 is flatter than both the 7mm mag and 300 RUM. 300RUM is a close second though.
my two favorites without getting to the 50bmg is the .204 ruger and the 243 WSSM
Pretty much ANYTHING in 6 to 7 MM is gonna shoot flat. The 6BR is great. The .260AI is great. As was mentioned, the 6.5x284. Tubb's 6XC is a killer at long ranges. The list goes on and on. The fact is, the boolits in this catagory have some of the best BCs around. |
.243, .204 ruger, 220 swift, 22-250, etc. Just get a copy of whatever the latest gun guise that list ammo trajectories and flip through it for ideas. Remember low drag specialty bullets and wildcats can do wonders.

6x284 loaded with a David Tubb 115gr DTAC bullet. I talked with Wyatt Tubb (David's son) about this bullet, and he said it was created to have the same ogive and aerodynamics of the 6.5 SMK.

Do you have picture or more info about this round? Thanks |

Looking at the ballistic tables, as far as non-proprietary non-varmint calibers the flattest shooting cartridge is the 7mm RUM.
As far as non-proprietary non-varmint calibers that you can actually find ammo for, 270 WSM. |
Just looking at the Winchester book...The .270 WSM 150 PP is just slightly flater than the .243 WSSM. .243 .223 wssm .220 swift .22-250 .204 .25-06 .270 wsm According to Wichesters book. Some are so close it doesn't matter. And some have limited shells out at this piont. I would exspect a huge change with .243 WSSM in an 80 vs 100 grain. |

CRC Here is a link to David Tubb's website: www.davidtubb.com/ammo_home.html It's the bullet he loads in his 6xc. If a 6.5x284 shoots pretty flat out to 1,000, i would think that a 6x284 would be like a laser. I have a friend building a rifle for a varmint hunter in 6x284. The barrel life will be short, but fun. I don't have any ballistic tables for this round, but when my friend takes it out to test fire it, I will be sure to tag along and see if we can stretch it out a little. |

Sure, pick the stubbiest, slowest 270 WSM round. Also, note that I said non-varmint round. So take the 223 wssm, 220, 22-250 and .204 off of there. Now compare the 270 WSM BT with the 25-06, 243 or .243 wssm. The WSM shoots flatter. At 500 yards with a 200 yard zero, it drops 32.8". The 243 WSSM (95 grain BT) drops 34.5. The 25-6 drops 35.6 (110 grain BT). This is with the flattest shooting non varmint bullets for the 25-06 and .243 WSSM. Put a 100 grain varmint bullet in the 270 WSM and it would shoot flatter than the varmint bullets in the 25-06 or 243 WSSM, as well as the 204, 22-250 and 220. |

.416 Barrett shoots even flatter and stay's supersonic for longer. The .408 goes transsonic between 2300-2400, the Barrett .416 stay's superconic past 2500! |

6mm Remington AI.
4000 ft/s with 50 grain bullets is pretty easy to get. |
Note to all that dont know 7mm remington ultra mag is not the same as the 7mm mag
Depending on distance, the .204 Ruger (as posted by several others) is pretty damn flat and fast!
Woody |
the flattest shooting cartridge would have to be the .338-378 or .30-378 Weatherby mag. out of a 26" barrel(or longer!)
.257 Weatherby is laser flat out to 300yds some of the Remington Ultramags look pretty flat shooting 7mmRUM, .300RUM, .338RUM |
