Should I buy this swiss masterpeice? or buy something else? I've already got a set of mosin's, m38 and m44. The ammo is a little hard to come by, 7.5x55. I know nothing about this round or its ballistics, and I also know little about this rifle. What do you think? is there something else I should look at for this cheap price range?
Let's say I didn't have the mosin's. Would I want one then or buy the mosin nagant first? Lastly, for the simple fact that I'd be buying another caliber that is alot more expensive, should I buy the k31 or go with another 7.62x54r gun? What about something totally different? Any opinions? |
I bought one last month and like it so much I just bought three more. Brass was a bit on the high side but should last very well with the moderate pressures I'll load to.
The ammo isn't expensive. You'll probably love a K31. Might also want to consider grabbing a K98 and an Enfield, both are pretty cheap and ammo is plentiful. |

After shooting beside one at a classic battle rifle match this past weekend, it on my list.
Very cool guns and they pretty much shot curcles around the other bolt guns that day. CH eta: theseacow, IM "unka-boo" about these. He is a local Oregonian and would likely let you shoot his. you ever make the Practical Rifle match at Tricounty in Tualitan? Ssecond sat of everymonth!! CHeck the OR forum for more. |
There's a C&R forum on the Armory board.
But yes, grab a K31; you won't be disappointed. Yeah, the ammo is more expensive than Wolf, but it's worth it. Just look at it this way.. it's a good incentive to start reloading. |
As your standard issue arms go, this is true. Remember, there are whole slew of match and sniper C&R's....so most accurate is a broad stroke. Swede 96's are stunningly accurate, too. That said, I agree that the K-31 is a wonderful weapon, as are all the Schmidt Rubin rifles. I can't believe there are any military rifle fans out there that don't have one yet, but some guys take 25 years to get laid too so there's no guessing what people's priorities are. |

Yes get one there works of art, they really are built like swiss watches the presision is something else, the action is ultra smooth, it's FAST, you'll go through ammo almost as quick as a semi-auto, it has a free float barrel under the handgaurds with only 2 glass bedded points of contact, and the there just nice to look at....
The quality control is incredibal, the Swiss were looking for quality over quantity, and price was no object, they had a dedicated factory for almost every part of the gun, and each and every part was individually inspected, then the rifle was inspected again, it's not uncommon to find all matching rifles whose parts were manufactured up to about 4 to 5 years apart, meaning it took them that long to build it.... The accuracy is also incredibal many rifles are able to put all there shots THROUGH ONE HOLE, the worst accuracy reported is still in the 1 MOA range, most people don't shoot that accuratly, and the surplus ammunition is considered match grade, someone figured that if the same rifle were manufactured today, with the same level of quality it would be about a $4,000 rifle.... Also if you look under the buttplate theres alot of times a tag with the origional Swiss Soldier who was issued the rifles name, and address, many people have got into corrospondents with the origional owners.... |
Ammo admittedly is a bit pricey – at least compared to surplus 7.62X54R and such.
Still, I’d say get one. They are just beautifully made, smooth working, and accurate rifles. And it’s not like they cost that much anyway. Ballistically, the 7.5 Swiss is very similar to the .308 Winchester or 7.62X54R Russian. |
Yup, the dreaded "sawback".
Gotta love the Swiss. Fuck that Geneva convention, it's not like it was signed in Switzerland or anything...hehe. But, I like their attitude - invade our little mountains and the gloves come off, and there's no need for dull, black bayonets either.....we'll give you a shiney saw right through the gut. |
umm...is that good or bad?
I hear they are accurate, but are they worth it, with the price of ammo versus something else or comparable? |
Beautiful guns, get one. You can deal with the ammo issue later, as it takes 175gr .308 bullets fine for reloads, and brass/dies are available.
You also need a M48 or 24/47. Embrace life as a caliber whore, so you can buy cheap and stack deep. PS- I have 4 M39s for a reason. |

Advice for anyone considering a K31.......Horde the stripper clips. They are not a thin little piece of metal like most here are used to seeing.
6 for $19.97 |

+1 Mine is a 1939 vintage. |

A bundle were included in my case buy from dansammo, no extra charge. |

Reading these replies makes me want a second K31. Just seeing my first K31 makes me want a second.
looks like ill go ahead and get one.
anybody know of the best place for ammo for this thing? Also, i have a friend who wants one as well, but only if there is a round available for hunting for it. Does one even exist? |
I ordered a 60rd brick from Dan's Ammo (dansammo.com) and another from Sportsmansguide.com and I think Dan's Ammo price with shipping was a dollar or two less. -mark |

You can buy hunting ammo in 7.5mm Swiss. I saw some Norma lead-tip 7.5 Swiss ammo at a gun store last week. It's expensive though. Are you sitting down? $60 for 20 rounds. |
Roll your own. |

No! Not a good idea to hunt with fmj. Doesn't produce humane kills. Of course, you were probably joking when you asked the question. |
Here's the answer for hunting rounds. Comments from Cole Distributing: http://www.coledistributing.com/ FNM made,7.5x55 Swiss soft point ammunition. *Non-corrosive. *174 grain, copper alloy ,soft point bullets. *Muzzle velocities of 2437 F.P.S. *Tests show these bullets expand well on game animals. *Boxer primed(large rifle),fully reloadable casings. *Brass cased, annealed case necks. *Sealed case necks and primers. *Manufactored to U.S. SAAMI and european C.I.P. standards. @$9.95/20 rnds.$48./100 rnds. $140./300 rnds.$225./500 rnds. or $399.95/1000 rnds.+S&H. My guess is that $10 for 20 rounds is a reasonable price for hunting cartridges. |

My K31 should be arriving tomorrow from AIM, just sucks I can't touch it till Friday as I am in Atlanta for Wireless training.
There's a finite number of K31's so I'd get one while the price is still where it is today. As soon as they dry up I predict the price will sky rocket on these and there's going to be a lot of folks saying "I wish I had of bought one when they were less than $100.".
They're rediculously accurate; I got to shoot my father's this weekend. And I thought my VZ24 was super accurate.
That's all I can say.............TOTALLY pleased with how mine performed at the match last Saturday. Although, the brass ejects pretty much straight up from the receiver.........so if you are a southpaw like me, beware HOT brass bouncing off the brim of your hat and into your face... Dansammo.com has strippers 10 for $10.....get 'em while you can! Good price on ammo too. |
I thought it was just me. I have to make an effort to point the ejection port away to the right because if I forget I get a case right to the forehead. |
Niiice, but all I see is short rifles. You need a long one too! |
I took off early from work and drove up to AIM last night. Brought home two more. I don't resist gun hyping very well...
I don't either, darn it. |
how is that clamp on mount? |
Yeah, I want to know too. |
you suck. |
which ones are walnut? |
My guess is that the bottom three probably are. |
Did I hear someone say there is a scout mount for these things? ???
K-31 fever has hit hard. Swingset, where did you get the longshanks? Are they still available? |
swingset:
I like short guns. The only long guns I have seen around me are at Collectors Firearms and the prices(ouch) are a bit steep for my taste. Heck, the K31 I saw there a few days ago was marked $325. MauserMark & Shane333: The darn thing cost more than the rifle did but it is a rock solid no gunsmithing mount that offsets to the right to clear the empties. I really like it but so far have only spent one range day with it. I was able to get a 1.5 inch 5-shot group with it using GP11. I need to take it out to the 200 and 300 yard portions of our range. I got mine here: www.grafs.com/fc/product/15734 The bottom 3 are walnut. |
Yes, Darrell makes one for this rifle.

The wife says my K31 arrived today.
I will have to post some pics of it when I get home on Friday and proceed to clean the hell out of it. |
