I would think the synthetic would be easier to "self-thread" a stud into than wood without boogering it up, but I haven't tried and I don't know.
If it needs to be drilled like a wood stock (and more knowledgeable folks should be along any minute to tell us both  ), I have an Uncle Mikes step-down drill set that works with a standard power drill and is made for installing swivel studs. I would be glad to drop it in the mail to you free of charge if you promise to mail it back to me when you're done with it. Let me know.  |

No problem at all. Measure about 1.5” up from the end of the stock and drill it just like a wood stock. There is a reinforcing rib along the inside of the stock that will hold the sling stud.

Pull the recoil pad off and take a look inside the stock before drilling a pilot hole.
Use vaseline on the screwdriver shaft before pushing it through the recoil pad. This will help prevent the screwdriver shaft from tearing the pad. |

I think your step down bit leaves a flat for the swivel head to sit on.
After drilling a pilot hole you could countersink the hole so the swivel head sits more flush with the stock. |

IIRC some of the synthetic stocks already have a flat spot molded in for the stud –– as long as you drill perp. to that I suppose the step-down would be completely unnecessary. |

Take your drill and drill a hole that matches up with the stud that you can get at wal mart. Find where you want to drill it (I reccomend getting a measurement off of an 870 that has the stud), drill the hole, and screw in
Be sure to get a drill bit that is smaller than the threads on the stud screw, otherwise you will have to glue the thing in there
