Have been looking to pick up another 9 mm pistol. Right now its between the M&P and an XD but with the SW mag promo, now's as good of a time to pick up an M&p as any.

Any reason not to go for the M&P over the XD?

Anyone that has both, please chime in as to which is your favorite and why.

PS: Already have a glock 17.

Get the M&P. You won't be disappointed.

For me, the M&P is a much better pistol than the XD. Lower bore axis, better ergonomics, etc.

I was shopping recently, after doing what I thought was a lot of research. None of my research included any serious looking at the M&P, until the gunshop guy "made" me check it out. I walked out with one and have been totally satisfied. I got a lot more than I thought I would for $499, it's a great fit in my hand and a real good shooter

I was undecided until reading this.  I'll put one on layaway next time I'm in the funshop.

i'd say get another glock.  the M&P may be a fine gun, but it doesn't have the high quality and inexpensive accessories as the glock has (mags).

Unless you have extra cash that you feel you don't need to use to purchase more important items.  I wouldn't mind having one, but it doesn't do anything that my glock doesn't do better. (but i like the glock grip angle)

Problem is that the Glock wholesales for about $50 more than the S&W. So you can get two extra mags for the difference.

SW is giving you 2 free mags if you buy a new M&P by the end of the year and it already comes with 2 mags, so I'm not concerned with the cost of mags.

I'd probably put that money saved toward night sights or a holster. But I do hear you on the inexpensive Glock accessories.

Most of the accessories for Glocks are cheap because they are un-needed and arent high quality

You will be happy with the M&P--I have the 40 full size and love it.

I have both the M&P and XD.  I like the way my XD shoots but I like the feel of the M&P better.  It would be hard for me to say which is better.  They are both great but if I had to choose right now I would say the M&P due to the 3 different grip sizes is comes with.

I can't believe someone hasn't said get both yet!!

I've been taking my time deciding on what my first handgun would be.  I think it will end up being the M&P.

I think its a good choice.

Haven't gotten any first hand experience with the 9. But, if it's anything like my .40 fullsize M&P... Get you one!  Ever since picking up my M&P .40 I have left my H&K USP's, 1911's, Sig 220 and others resting in the safe. I'm so impressed with this weapon that I'm trying to find a way to convince the agency I work for to allow me to carry it on duty in place of the issued Sig P220.

The rest of the arsenal is getting a break since the M&P came to live with me. I am not a domestic gun lover, I go German, But I tried the S&W 9 at the range one day and decided right there that it was for me. 5k rounds later, it is still my favorite.

One thing to keep in mind.............
S&W purchases helps our economy.
Glock purchases sends our money overseas!!!!!!!

I got the details for doing a trigger job on the 9mm M&P off
the internet and it was the easiest TJ I have ever done.
Don't discount the M&P because of the trigger.
Mine is better now than my G36 or my G17 both with 3lb connectors.
Breaks clean like a 5lb 1911 with no overtravel.

The M&P has a much better machined slide with some style.
Novak dovetail sights, Loaded chamber port, and a USA imprent.

Thanks for all the input...

The biggest common concern I see is the trigger. Theres a DIY fix online that lloks simple enough.

I placed an order for one yesturday. Should be here in a few days, but have the RI 7 day waiting period.

The problem I had with M&P is the tapered grip.
Fat in back by your palms and narrow up front by your fingers.
I have long fingers so the tapper does not work for me but might work just fine for you.

The XD is even sized grip.

Yay. M&P polymer frame is reinforced with fiberglass making it stiffer than Glock and XD's; comes with 3 grip inserts and is made in the USA unlike Glock from Austria or the XD which is made in Croatia

What about the trigger reset, did the trigger job improve that as well?

I don't know if the Burwell's original trigger job improves the reset but here's a post that discusses a more positive and pronounced reset: Perfect Trigger

Apparently using a MA compliant spring and a trigger job does the trick.

I hear you.  If you want a new 9, then it is certainly an option.  One I have been thinking about, but it's a hard sell, being that since I already have 6 g17 mags, and if I bought a g17, g19, etc, then I could use my g17 mags.  That being said, the m&p9 does look like a good gun.
