Here's another, more generic write-up on Beretta 92s. It doesn't go into super detail but covers all the common variants and some not-so-common ones. One trend you will see is that most of the following is discontinued, which is a good indicator of Beretta's shift in focus to the 90two and PX4 Storm. My goal is to render the Beretta forum a ghost-town, void of any questions! Seriously though, I hope this helps. Model Numbers and Calibers
- 92 - 9x19mm Para: the original and most popular, 92FS in production
- 90two - 9x19mm Para, .40 S&W: modernized 92 with a re-contoured slide and frame, shares the same basic design and operation, supplements the 92 and replaces the 96, in production
- 93R - 9x19mm Para: highly modified single-action 92 built for select-fire (semi / burst), NFA, discontinued
- 96 - .40 S&W: a 92 chambered for .40 and shares identical dimensions and most configuration options, discontinued
- 98 - 9x21mm IMI, 7.65x21mm Para: uses a re-chambered 92 barrel, marketed in countries where 9x19 is prohibited to civilians, early versions used 7.65, later versions used 9x21, discontinued
- 99 - 7.65x21mm Para: re-chambered version of the 92SB Compact L Type M, marketed in countries where 9x19 is prohibited to civilians, discontinued
Operating System Designations
- F - 92, 90wo, 96, 98, 99: DA/SA, slide-mounted safety / decock dual-function lever: flipping the lever down decocks hammer (if on SA) and places weapon on safe – user manually flips lever up to fire position
- G - 92, 90two, 96, 98: DA/SA, slide-mounted decock-only lever: flipping the lever down in SA decocks hammer and lever returns up to the fire position – no manual method to place weapon on safe
- D - 92, 90two, 96: DAO, no safety lever: external hammer spur removed (except on 90two), comes with lighter D-mainspring
- DS - 92, 96: DAO, slide-mounted safety-only lever : external hammer spur removed, flipping the lever down places weapon on safe – user manually flips lever up to fire position
- R - 93: SAO select-fire, frame-mounted safety and selector switch assembly: large front-facing lever selects 3-rd burst or semi-auto fire, smaller rear-facing lever adjusts manual safety (down for safe)
F Model (DA/SA) Lineage
- FS - 92, 96, 98: current “F” configuration, introduced large hammer pin, standard 92 frame and slide with fixed front sight, recent FS models have an angled dustcover – 92FS in production
- F (SB-F) - 92: introduced flared lower grip, grooved / squared trigger guard, chrome-lined barrel, and Bruniton finish – initial version of the M9, discontinued
- SB (S-1) - 92, 98: introduced firing pin block and relocated mag release to behind the trigger guard, discontinued
- S - 92: first major modification of the 92, replaced thumb safety with slide-mounted safety / decocker, discontinued
- Original - 92: blued finish, round trigger guard, lower grip mag release, frame-mounted thumb safety, discontinued
Configuration Options and Variants
- Brigadier - 92/96FS, 92/96D, 98FS: heavy, slightly thicker slide with removable front sights, discontinued
- Inox - 92, 96, 98: silver stainless, non chrome-lined barrel / slide with matching anodized frame and parts, 92FS Inox in production
- Vertec - 92/96FS, 92/96D, 92/96G: modified frame with 1911-style grip with a thicker front trigger guard, flat backstrap, thinner grip panels, integrated 1913 rail, beveled magwell, and removable front sight, discontinued
- SD - 92/96G-SD: “Special Duty”, Vertec frame but using standard 92 style grip (retains the magwell and adds front / back grip checkering) and Brigadier slide with night sights, discontinued

- Compact - 92SB: shorter barrel / slide and shortened grip, discontinued
- Compact Type M - 92SB: reduces Compact size and a slim grip using single-stack mags, discontinued

- Compact L Type M - 92FS: reduces Compact L size and a slim grip using single-stack mags, discontinued
