Here's another, more generic write-up on Beretta 92s. It doesn't go into super detail but covers all the common variants and some not-so-common ones. One trend you will see is that most of the following is discontinued, which is a good indicator of Beretta's shift in focus to the 90two and PX4 Storm. My goal is to render the Beretta forum a ghost-town, void of any questions! Seriously though, I hope this helps. Of course, it's a work in progress and please inform me of any mistakes - you won't hurt my feelings.

Model Numbers and Calibers

- 92 - 9x19mm Para: the original and most popular, 92FS in production
- 90two - 9x19mm Para, .40 S&W: modernized 92 with a re-contoured slide and frame, shares the same basic design and operation, supplements the 92 and replaces the 96, in production
- 93R - 9x19mm Para:  highly modified single-action 92 built for select-fire (semi / burst), NFA, discontinued
- 96 - .40 S&W: a 92 chambered for .40 and shares identical dimensions and most configuration options, discontinued
- 98 - 9x21mm IMI, 7.65x21mm Para: uses a re-chambered 92 barrel, marketed in countries where 9x19 is prohibited to civilians, early versions used 7.65, later versions used 9x21, discontinued
- 99 - 7.65x21mm Para: re-chambered version of the 92SB Compact L Type M, marketed in countries where 9x19 is prohibited to civilians, discontinued

Operating System Designations

- F - 92, 90wo, 96, 98, 99: DA/SA, slide-mounted safety / decock dual-function lever: flipping the lever down decocks hammer (if on SA) and places weapon on safe – user manually flips lever up to fire position
- G - 92, 90two, 96, 98: DA/SA, slide-mounted decock-only lever: flipping the lever down in SA decocks hammer and lever returns up to the fire position – no manual method to place weapon on safe
- D - 92, 90two, 96: DAO, no safety lever: external hammer spur removed (except on 90two), comes with lighter D-mainspring
- DS - 92, 96: DAO, slide-mounted safety-only lever : external hammer spur removed, flipping the lever down places weapon on safe – user manually flips lever up to fire position
- R - 93: SAO select-fire, frame-mounted safety and selector switch assembly: large front-facing lever selects 3-rd burst or semi-auto fire, smaller rear-facing lever adjusts manual safety (down for safe)

F Model (DA/SA) Lineage

- FS - 92, 96, 98: current “F” configuration, introduced large hammer pin, standard 92 frame and slide with fixed front sight, recent FS models have an angled dustcover – 92FS in production
