So I've had a Gen 2 G17 for around ten years now.  I don't really have anything against it but rarely shoot it anymore and have been thinking about how to make it more useful.  It already has a 3.5# trigger, extended controls, several spare mags and a few holsters.  All of which push me to hang onto it.  Maybe it would a prime candidate for my first attempt at frame stippling.  I thought about bobbing the grip down to accept a G19 mag for better use as a CCW. Maybe an add on rail for a light.

Is this silly?  Should I just sell it and get a G19. That would make it shorter overall for CC.  Or possibly a Gen 3 to gain a rail.

The 17rnd mags would still work either way, but 15rnds for the size savings is a good trade IMO.

Any one else bob a G17? Happy with the results?  Or just wish you would have just traded it for a G19?

****UPDATE***

It's done!!  Still a little bit of finishing to do, but it functions perfectly and doesn't look bad.  Some say this will affect resale, I don't think I'll ever sell it !!

I've been debating the very same thing.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a g19 no matter what I do, but in the mean time I'm thinking about modding the g17 frame.

If bobbing the frame will make the weapon more useful to you than it is now, you may well want to consider it. I've seen some 17s cut to 19 length and I think they look fine and make for a very useful weapon.

I'm not sure about the success of adding a rail to the dustcover. Has anyone done this?

Keep in mind that if you do alter the frame of your 17, it will make it a lot tougher to sell later if it turns out that you still don't use the pistol much. If you want a rail too, perhaps your best option is to sell that 17 to someone who wants a Gen2 pistol and get yourself a Gen3 19.

Maybe a range gun would be the ticket.  A longer slide gives you a longer sight radius and more MV.  Besides it looks cool if you get one without the cutout.  Here's my custom G24 (6") made from my G22.  It's the same length as a 17L but without the cutout.

It's a good mate to my G20/12L>

This debate started with the possibility of adding a G26 as an EDC option to my current EDC G36.  But for the minimal size difference not much else would be gained.  So I considered the ever popular G19.  Which made me question what role that would leave for the G17.  Then came the either sell the G17 for a G19 or "make" the 17 more of a multi-role tool and put off the 19.

By the way, nice work on the G20!   Looks like some great 10mm fun.  I rarely shoot my G20 (my first Glock), although I have been considering moving it to a hunting role.  Once I find a barrel I like, I want to take a WV whitetail with it.

The 19 will do it's part at distance of you do your part in fundamentals.  The only difference I can tell between my 22 and 19 is the 19's portability.  It goes more places than my 22 ever will.

Pics please!!

& did you have it done, by?  Or a DIY?  Advice for DIY?? Be sides practicing on something less expen$ive first?

I've seen pics of some done with finger notches in the bottom of the grip an margin stippling on the may filling the notch.  Except I might leave the grip in front of and behind the mag for not just a flush fit but an recessed fit.

Another vote for chopping the grip and stippling it.

I am planning on buying a G17 for that exact purpose.

I bought this one from the EE. G17 with the frame cut down to G19 length. Shorter, more concealable grip of the G19 with the sight radius of the G17. Best of both worlds? Maybe..... maybe not, but it fits my hand well and points pretty decent (YMMV). Previous owner also rounded and under cut the trigger guard and stippled the frame.

Well I finally did it.  I still have a little finish work to do.  I'll probably do some more stippling.  So far I'm very happy with it.  Can't see that I will ever regret it either.

Here's a few pics.  I'll post more later.

Thanks for all the comments.  Again, I'm so glad I finally did it.  Only wished I would have sooner.  Brought new excitement to an old toy.

To anyone considering it, GO DO IT!!!  Practice on some scrap plastic and once you found "your" technique, take the plunge.  Start with stippling, move on to sanding, filling, reshaping, cutting ect.  Then enjoy...
