There is no way a solder from the 1st Inf is carrying a G19 in combat!

The pistol mag on the right side of the holster looks mighty long.
Given the accesories mounted on the rifle, it looks like he has some type of rail system mounted. |

Yup - plenty of Glocks in the country now - no E-6 would be issued a pistol AND rifle. That is clearly a backup weapon he finagled on his own. Edit: Looks like he pinned on 6 while there - that lower rocker is a Sharpie-mod! |

Jeff Cooper has written before that in times of war soldiers not issued sidearms have historically found ways to get them. Even if "the brass" doesn't think they need them, the soldier in the trenches (or streets as it were) are the ones best able to decide what sort of equipment they need.

I carried a Charter Arms Bulldog .44 when I was in the 1st Inf. in country but not out in plain view. Interesting.

An infantryman's load is too heavy already. Choice of loadout is always an exercise in calculated risk. I don't think they should be on TO&Es, but wouldn't get too upset if Joe picked one up during low-intensity ops / urban patrolling situations like depicted in the picture. |

I have heard some Marines (ones in high places) are talking about issuing sidearms to all soldiers. Apparently its the preferred weapon for room clearing for many Marines.

A guy I worked for a few years ago was in Marine Recon (was still in the Reserves a the time) and he said he carried a Glock 19 whenever he could. He was an officer so which gave him more freedom.

I second the idea about the room clearing bit - at least for those guys without M4's. Even though a grunts load is normally pretty freak'n heavy, I would have found room for a pistol.

I'm in the sandbox right now and was lucky enough to be issued both a rifle and apistol. many of our rifles/carbines have the knights armament rail system for all the bolt on do dads the army hands out now. my 2 cents they would be better off buying more ammo and teaching more shooting skill than trying to buy it with technology. my rifle is a plain m16a4 with no mods or extra optics etc.
general order #1 in country is you can not posess or carry a personally owned firearm. either someone is looking the other way(which would be good) or a unit has authorized its members to use captured stocks of weapons which would then technically not be personal. |

Captured sotcks of weapons? Hell, Glocks are cheap, I'd let them capture it from me before we deployed, and let another unit capture it from me when we left. Throw downs are about all I would want a Glock for anyway.
