That would be called a "tax minimization strategy". It sounds good: 1. AR "style" sights 2. Real lugged bolt 3. Milled receiver 4. Chrome lined chamber & barrel 5. Takes Ak mags It just looks slightly fugly. Maybe the day crew has one and can chime in. Accountant |

For $600 I can think of quite a few 7.62x39 guns out there that I would rather have than an Enfield.

I believe CZ makes a 7.62x39 bolt gun.. Might be worth looking into.
Me, I'm about sold on one of the x39 Enfields. It's a really slick bolt action if done right, and Lithgow knew what they were doing 50-odd years ago, so why not now?

The CZ 550 is available in a Carbine chambered in 7.62x39mm with a 5 rd. detachable box mag, Mauser '98 style action. Beautiful rifles.
Ruger periodically put out there M77MKII in 7.62x39mm, usually with a synthetic stock. I've handled and sold both of the above.....the CZ is the winner between the two hands down. |

A bolt action Enfield in 7.62X39. Wonder if it will fit a 40rd mag? Seems kind of self defeating to have 40rds on a bolt gun though.

5 SKS in good condition or 3 in unissued condition. Those are semi-auto furthermore M43 just does not have legs past 200 meters and match accuraccy loads are not much better than ball the round just has limitations on what you can expect from it. Echo the thought of CZ if you want bolt gun, or just go with M-14 mag variant they sell. 7.62X51 surplus or wolf is cheap and plentiful, the only things cheaper now are 54R and 7.92 surplus. |

I've handled them at the SHOT Show. They are very well made and yes, they will take the hi-cap versions of the AK47 and M-14 (respectively) mags.
You have to look at the market niche these are aimed at. I'm not too interested in the 7.62x39 rifle, but if someone wanted a hi-cap rifle in that caliber in a state where the commissars had forbidden evil semi-automatics, this could be a good choice. The LE action is very fast. I once shot an IDPA side match with a No4/No5 conversion in .303 and finished in the middle of the pack. Everyone else was shooting semi-autos, mostly in 5.56mm. I'm interested in the 7.62x51. I've always wanted one, though I'd have to immediately start chopping on it. They are heavy. I'm not sure if it is a heavy barrel, extra metal in the receiver or if the wood is really dense. The ones I handled were very nicely made. I'd rather see the carbine version with a No5 style stock, but they didn't ask me. Wait, actually they did. I talked to the guy from Tristar 4 years ago and told him what I thought so I guess I should say they asked, but didn't listen. |

I would agree for the most part but those SMLE's can be operated pretty fast . That would be a lot of sustained fire power . Proly screws up any balance to the rifle . I'd carry it with a 5 or 10 rder w/ High Cap. tucked away as extra ammo / or if something goes south as I dont think any one would knowingly get into a shoot out with one . It could turn out to be a damn accurate little rifle . W/ irons (if they are any good) you could probaby keep folks heads down at 400 yards . THE BIG atraction to me would be it's "nuts ass tough" self that would last "Forever" combined w/ cheap ammo . Between who knows what kind of laws / restrictions on ammo / rifle types , It could be a usefull "sleeper" that your great grandkids would be eternalty gratfull , along with 10,000 rd to go w/ it .

This is a good cross between the old "battle rifle" and the new, "assault rifle", and I own enfields as well, they are good reliable products.
600 seems steep to me, but I like the concept, its better than cutting them up like they were doing in Australia. If the price was more reasonable, I think I'd have to get one, but the Monte Carlo stock would have to go, in favor of a standard one, it just takes too much of the military look away. |

What sucks is most of the distributors they list are Accusport which wont sell to "low volume" dealers like me, they refused me years ago because my shipping and home address were the same, Lew Horton also made me send a pic of my storefront, before they would sell to me.
I'm going to contact one of the other distributors and see what the real deal is on them. The match 308 in long barrel configuration, that takes the M14 mags is a great idea as well, kind of puts me into a replica of the Enfield sniper rifle I always wanted but couldnt afford, not to mention in a way easier caliber to outfit with match ammo. |

When you look at the price, it really needs to be compared to a newly manufactured rifle, not a surplus military. The finish and wood is much nicer and they really are new. I don't know if any of the parts will interchange with surplus No.4, but any do, it isn't very many.

Still on the enfield action, I have sold Mini Mausers to customers chambered in the 7.62x 39 round. I would love to see a M1 Garand type weapon that took ak mags. That would be interesting to say the least. |

I just checked my AcuSport catalog #41A and couldn't find any of these TriStar rifles. TriStar threads crop up every few months, but I have never heard of anyone posting that they've actually been able to buy one of these in the USA. I wonder if perhaps they're the firearm equivalent of vaporware? |

I found out a little more from Lawrence Ordnance in Australia. Standard No. 4 rear peep sight, teak stocks. They're made by "Australian International Arms, and the 16" weighs in at 6.9lbs.
