Just got the new SOG catalog today, and they are advertising .22lr AK trainers. Anyone got the scoop on these? The picture sucks, all you can really see is the silhouette - the only thing you can see for certain is that is appears to use a metal .223 mag with a .22lr insert (10 rounds). Maybe old news, but I can say that I've heard of these before. At $300, doubtless some will say you can get a centerfire for that price and never have to worry about spare parts of magazines, but seems pretty neat.

i knew sog had the german franz w. heym trainers and the romanian m69 bolt action trainers...but, an ak trainer? got a link, a pic???
i'm interested! |
Yeah, I'd like a link or scanned pic too. I get SOG's catalogs, but I haven't received mine yet. A German or Romanian AK22 trainer would be a cool addition to the collection.
take care, Tec |
Wow, that's something of a major developement if they really are AK-action and in .22LR. Not only have I never heard of them, but I never thought a real .22 AK trainer would ever be imported in a legal semi-auto configuration.
Thanks! Wow...bizarre pic. It almost looks like a something SOG made in Photoshop from a FAL/AK composite. I'll have to see a better pic to make a final call...apparently it might be a RATMIL training rifle, but not sure what's up with that stock and grip.
take care, Tec |
Well, when i goto work today, I am ordering one.. If it's not up to snuff I can send it back...
i forgot to add:
there are no spare magazines available...but, i happen to know someome that is very handy with tools!!! |
shotar, pick me up a german .22 mag if you see one local (show at medina this weekend...i might go). i'll buy it from you and try it and/or modify it to suit.
who knows if the bolts are the same? sog's got a pretty good return policy. i just wonder if these are 5.45 bbls. or .22 rimfire bore jobs???? the folks at sog were (as usuall) clueless or playing stupid. notice the 'odd' grip and stock in the pic? black polymer? huh? probably cheap plastic 'toy' crap...but, we will see. i never hold my breath on these things...but, you how much i like rimfires! lots of fun there! forgot to add: my guess is that these are not actual training rifles, but rather are models designed for civilian sale. again...time will tell. |
wife says I have to hold off. Still more house stuff, but I may try for a HR 12 at CMP with shortened stock. I'm short ya know. I gotta get something soon. I do so like aquiring.
looks like the "SAW" type grip that tapco and othersell. Proibably an added american part for parts compliance. |
i can't imagine it needing american made parts. i doubt there are high capicity magazines in existence.
Actually now that you mention it, would rimefires even fall under the 89 importban? I'm not sure. My understanding was that it still has a detachable magazine, and a protruding pistol grip, and such so it could still fall under the import ban. And the only rimfires excluded from the import or AW bans(IIRC) were tube fed guns. I'm not really all that up on the import ban though so I'm not sure. |

Hope the handguards have heat sheilds
Ad does not even specify semi-auto, but far more cool factor than a 10/22. |
Ya know I wish I had the cash to order one just because it would be cool as shit to be able to go out and tree rat hunt with an AR in .22lr and an AK in .22lr
gotta be a fake gas system blowback or a straight-pull bolt.
i told mickeymouse to fingerfuck it and run the piss out of it until i pick it up. |
I have high-hopes, but part of me sees M69 trainers with random AK parts glued/welded on after importation...
We are gonna have to get pics once you guys get yours. |

damn!!!!!
a quadruple-tap!!! it's a sign from the godz!!! this bitch is gonna run like a raped ape! |

Hmmmm - I dunno. If the picture is an accurate representation of the rifle, even as only a silhouette, I don't think it can be an modified armscorp. The back of the receiver is straight, not angled, and it is missing the magwell protrusion on the bottom of the receiver as the armscorp has. And while I certainly wouldn't put it past Century to cobble something together, I don't think SOG is that sort of outfit - I don't recall them doing anything other than reselling, and they're the only place I've seen these (at least so far).
The stock and PG do look FAL'ish, though - although even that doesn't seem quite right. The hump in the stock seems to start a bit late for any of the FAL stocks I'm familiar with. Of course, they could have just photoshopped a an SAR-3 with a weird stock - .223, .22lr, close enough, right? Rocko |
YOU BASTARDS!
i'm charging each of you $5 for updates...$10 if it really is a $300 piece of shit! heheh! dunno how bad it can be. certainly no worse than the shit century can turn an sar/wasr into! best case scenario...it's a half-assed clone on the mpikmpkimmppkkiimmipkmmpikm 72 from east germany. worst case scenario...it's a friggin' $49 m69 stuffed inside a wasr and fitted with a hokey ak mag that should have become a mp3 player. |

i got it!!! it's a RECOIL BOOT!!!!! well...it IS a.22, after all! |
when it arrives at our world headquarters, perhaps mickeymouse can give his expert opinion of it. he can wring it out to his heart's content.
that's the beauty of a rimfire. you can shoot all damn day for $10. hmmm? maybe a folder...an ak-74 brake (tame that awesoome recoil and muzzle flash!)...a scope and optic rail (perfect for tree rats or humiliating the bozo next to you that thinks his uber-trick ar15 is accurate)...and maybe even lose the dried oatmeal furniture for some old polymer stuff i have in the spare parts bins. |
Thanks Campy for taking point on this one!
Where do I send the $5 ??? |
it shipped yesterday and will arrive at awms world headquarters...i'm guessing on monday. it's not far from sog to corporate headquarters.
i told mickey he could piss around with it, if he felt like it. if he feels ambitious, he could do a write up on it...he knows more about guns than i do. |
FYI , I was googling yesterday and Romania does indeed make a .22 ak semi auto trainer to mimic there .223 and 5.45 AKs.

Got a link or anything like that? |
