I avoid using the term 'stupid' and never call anyone by that moniker...

However, today i am stupid....

Bullet Puller: (manuf - Berry's, traditional hammer-like with 4 collets)

The screwable cap remains up.
The collet's smooth side interfaces with the hammer.
The cartridge is place thru the collet, bullet first.
The bullet is firmly retained by the rim of the case.
Cap is screwed back on tight.
With the cap end still up, the hammer is struck on the
opposing end on a thick butcher block table.
Once, twice, three times - nice sharp firm strikes....
NOTHING

SiX, seven, eight times...
NOTHING

Everything is broken down is repeated as per step one.
Fifteen, sixteen, 25....
NOTHING

I tried this on :
A reloaded cartridge without powder - new case
A Black Hills new cartridge (.223 69g SMK HPBT)
A reloaded cartridge without powder, used case x 1

WTF am I doing wrong?

Redding Model #5 Powder Trickler

I can not come close to even guessing how to use this!!!!

PLEASE HELP THIS STUPID MAN!!!???

(8 years med/surgical training, 17 years practice, and I finally met my match - a f**kin' hammer and dispenser......)

DANO

FWIW, these rounds are NOT charged with powder - I was fine tuning the seating die...
As a newbie to reloading, I also crimped the rounds, just 'checking out' the press.

Will the absence of powder and the crimps prevent freeing the bullets?

As far as the trickler, I was just stymied as how to do the actual application..

Stilll not sure as to how the piece works...

Thanks

Move away from the reloading bench before you hurt yourself and log into the Reloading Forum here on ARFCOM.

MIKE,

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, this forum is THE PLACE WHERE WE ASK QUESTIONS!

Now, I have read the pinned forum docs on reloading -and have referred to them countless times..
I referred to my ABCs of reloading and the Sierra Manual many times BEFORE PURCHASING MY PRESS.

Now, I havn't even reloaded my FIRST ROUND!

IF YOU READ MY NOTE, iT CLEARLY STATES THAT MY CARTRIDGES ARE WITHOUT POWDER!

This was done to PRACTICE at the stations of my Dillon 550 - to get the feel of the press.
By not priming and charging, I take away any potential factors that can go kaboom!

My inquiry here was to ask the PROPER TECHNIQUE REGARDING THE BULLET PULLER.
I SIMPLY COULD NOT GET IT TO WORK.

AS demonstrated on the THR forum, 14 replies expressed similiar problems
when they started using a PULLER, especially on light weight bullets.
And they proceeded to give me the proper technique.
AND IT WORKED..

Its not in any of the pinned documents....

If its not an appropriate question here, than where???

As to the trickler question, again I COULD NOT FIGURE IT.
I can show you how a replacement 1st metatarsal joint implant works,
but not this trickler.

Now, if a noobie with thinner skin than me got this response, he may just go away forever.

So, Mike, show me the errror of my ways...
What behavior that I demonstated was dangerous?
where exactly should I read to correct myself?

AS we say in NJ, PUT UP OR STEP OFF!

in regards to the trickler:

must be on flat level surface.
put the powder in the tool and rotate the tube.
it will take several rotations to initiate the flow.
after that it only takes a few turns to reach your desired weight.

thanks...
once I set everything up it was obvious!

The trickler I bought (RCBS) HAS A NICE HEAVY BOTTOM -
Once I placed a 1 inch block of wood underneath the trickler,
the tube end was just at the scale pan's height and edge.

Now the whole set upwould be a snap if the
RCBS chargemaster 750 scale would hold its zero!

Seems that I have to zero it before every weight!

Perhaps it needs a break in period -

thanks

you need to hit t5he hammer off of something with little give ie concrete floor.  A swing like your driving in a 10 penny nail.

the powder trickle you just fill the hopper with powder and turn a flake or two comes out at a time.

If you have a tight crimp ie a roll type crimp. good luck.  A trapper crimp ie 9mm rounds are much easier to remove.
