I’ve been looking into IR lasers over the past few weeks and even as a FFL/SOT, there is more bullshit (and cost) associated with these things then I care for. One of the guys brought to my attention that one of our friends ( www.hayesresearch.com ) had gotten into IR laser game. At an MSRP of $400, it was worth looking into.
I called him and he did indeed have them in stock, wrote him a company check (he also takes Paypal, but I don’t do pay pal), and he dropped off my laser the next day (he’s local to me). The Hayes Research IWAL (Infrared Weapon Aiming Laser) came nice packaged in a box with protective foam with all the goodies. It included the laser, a mount, approx 6” pressure switch, batteries, and all necessary tools and hardware for installation. I installed it on a Larue rail on my rifle. The mount while plain appears to be solid (no shifting of zero after F/A mag dumps). Using a MUM-14 NVG behind an Aimpoint, I was able to zero it in no time. It was quite a sight seeing the beam through the monocular but not with naked eye- very cool. A few days later we made it out to some night training. I was only able to test it at less then 100 yards. With the MUM-14 head mounted I was able to shoot in a variety of positions and make hits with ease over the course of 330 rounds. For the money, this sight cannot be beat. The other nice thing is that one can be assured that this is not stolen military property like that of PEQs and PAQs that go up for sale every once in awhile. You see the lasers at www.hayesresearch.com and click on IWAL. We might do a limited buy of these and have them for sale (working on a price now). I'll post pics in a day or so. |

That is the only mount they have for it at the moment. They are working on an offset mount. c4 |

That's all well and good, but a visable laser can burn a dot into the tube of my NVD. That's why I wanted an IR (non-visible) laser.
An IR will burn a dot just the same. |

Why would anyone ever buy a toy product for a real weapon??? C4 |
I dont know why they call it a toy. Maybe has something to do with the legality of owning one in Hong Kong. They ship worldwide, so maybe thats their way around customs.
It's very good laser for the money. Not as a rugged as a US issue PAC-4, but the laser is very strong. I've gotten alot of good use out mine. Well worth the price. |
Oh crap...
It's kinda late for popcorn...but, I'll wait up just the same. |
It has nothing to do with the law. The Hong Kong version of the PAQ-4C is a toy. (made by G&P for the airsoft market) It's a great copy...actually pretty darn-near identical. It has a strong laser that will hold up to AR live fire (ARs have little, or no kick to speak of). The strength and range on the laser is reasonable for the cost. For all intense purposes, it's very useful on a rifle. However, the real PAQ-4 is infrared (invisible without night vision). It's weatherproof and is more robust overall. There are IR PAQ-4C clones available online (using the same G&P frame)...that's for another discussion. The Hayes IR looks interesting... |

OMG! I just got to play with the first article of the off-set mount...it is the heat. I have one ordered and will get a picture up as soon as I can.
Mark, I will have one locally for you to look at if you like. C4 |

I'd love to see how it performs...just let me know when we can get together.
Roger, will do. C4 |

G&R Tactical is proud to announce that we will be stocking these lasers. I recieved a shipment in on Friday and have been playing with this laser everynight. It is one of the most powerful I have seen and is very light weight. More to follow.....

Am i seeing something different, or does the offset mount attach to the rail with the set screws? I'm not so sure i like the idea of grinding set screws into my rails to attach the laser, and it doesn't seem like that method would hold zero if you were rough with it. Correct me if i'm wrong, cause i like the laser, just seems like the mount is less than optimal.
There are two screws that go into the femal section of the rail. I don't think you would see much to any damage. C4 |
Cost with the offset mount is going to be $500. C4 |

On your website yet, Grant? |

What he said! |

Not yet, but you can call and order one from me 757-483-0654. C4 |

Will they have a clicky tail cap option in the future? Is it waterproofed? Unit weight with batteries plus offset mount?
No offical connection. Ryan comes up with the coolest hard to get stuff some times. I persoanly buy stuff from him (mostly Smoke Grenades and Powder Coating). I'm not sure how/why he got an itch to get into lasers, but the price is right, they didn't "fall off a truck" and he's comming out with cool mounts and stuff every other week. I don't make one red cent off any of this (and I paid for mine). I will personally vouch for him as a seller and as a shooter. |
No click tailcap on these models. They are water resistant. I don't have the weights just yet, but will get that for you. These lasers use the same batts that the Aimpoint uses (1/3N). C4 |
So if you throw it in the sink will it kill the laser? What is done to make them water resistant yet not water proofed? Are the bateries sealed? Is the laser itself sealed? How does the adjustment work on the laser?
There is an O-ring for the battery compartment and the batts are sealed (just like the ones for the Aimpoint). There are elevation and windage screws for adjustment. I will get some pics up soon with some comparison shots of it against other IR lasers. C4 |
Sean, I wouldnt accuse of that, you have been straight up with me in our dealings. For some reason I thought this guy was a partner or worker there. I must be mixing him up with someone else. |
No worries...He used to work for me about 4 years ago, that's how I know him. He is a regular at our AZ get togethers and such. |
It actually uses 2 1/3N batts. We don't know what the run time is just yet, but would say that it is around 24 hours. C4 |
Weight of the laser (with batts) and standard mount is 2.6 ounces. C4 |
This is a very slick unit. I hope they dont get banned. Do they have a warranty?
Hey Grant, Range of this unit? 5mW, bout 1000M? Thanks |
I would say that is accurate. The thing just keeps on going! C4 |
I talked to Ryan for a bit about future legal concerns myself but he explained things and due to the fact that they're under 5mw there shouldn't be a problem. I look forward to getting them in and we will get some good range reports ASAP. |
