I just returned from a 10 day shoot and had the time to test many different ammunition types for fragmentation/expansion/accuracy including LC M80 steel jacket  ammunition. 2 rounds of LC M80 steel jacket/lead core ammunition were fired into water bags at 10 feet from a standard 22" M14 rifle. The resulting fragments are stuck to the front and back of the magnet with a test round stuck to the magnet above.

Edit: I incorporated these pics into the larger pic below.

2 copper jacket/lead core rounds fired under same protocol flattened/distorted, but did not fragment.

So the steel jacketed round fragged and the copper jacket didn't.

The last picture is consistent with what i'm used to seeing from those rounds.

Good job, actually shooting them into something instead speculating about what they do.

The steel jacket LC M80 tested was pulled from 100rd. assault belts linked (4) M80 ball - (1) M62 tracer. The headstamp is LC 87 with NATO cross. The non-magnetic gilded metal (GM)  jacket 7.62x51mm tested was F4 Aussie headstamped AFF 89.

Note: I plan to test steel jacket LC 87, WCC 07, DAG 93 (newer AB22/DM111 type German thin steel jacket), & Men-85 (older DM41 type German thin steel jacket)  7.62x51mm ammo for fragmentation distance/velocity threshold during a week-long shoot in September.

Gustav and Ike messed things up pretty well down here, but these are some recovered bullets from common types of 7.62x51mm. Doc Roberts has stated that steel jacket LC M80 does not fragment at 100yds and that the German thin jacket 7.62x51mm fragments at a much lower threshold. Not surprisingly, he was absolutely correct. The German AB22/DM111 steel jacket looked to fragment to about the same extent at 200yds as steel jacket LC M80 did at 10 feet. Impact of the German AB22/DM111 with the water boxes was almost as explosive as the Hornady TAP 155gr. AMAX.

Bit of a grave dig, but Google turned up this thread while I was looking for info on the AB22 projectile.

Dans Ammo looks to have this in stock for $270/500 right now.  Just ordered 1k, will let you know how it looks when it arrives.

That's actually a good price in today's market.  I think ATG had some a few months ago for a decent price, but they had a small % of cases with corrosion.  I load my own SD ammo with 155gr AMAX though and felt that 50 cents a round was a bit much considering the corrosion.

You say that like that's a bad thing.....

In all seriousness there should be more stuff in the ammo section dedicated to .308 since there are so many ARs in the cartridge. The ammo section and  it's stickies are almost all dedicated to 5.56. I doubt there will ever be an ammo subsection in the variants and it is hard to find good info on certain loads in .308 here. Just a thought, I know it was shared by a few in he variants section...
