This is my first post here so I hope this goes the way it should. Also this is my first retro build. This has been an ongoing project for the last 5 years I picked up a few parts during high school and just now finally was able to acquire all that I wanted and needed. Receiver is NDS XM16E1 got it in Fri. and got my LPK installed this mornin I wish I had a roll pin holder and punch would have made it much easier the pivot spring and pin was fun w/o the tool but not as bad as I thought it would be, Upper is a M16A1 I ordered from Cope's Dist., Hand guards, Butt stock (non-compartment), Flat delta ring ass.,and gas tube NOS off of GB, '70s vintage barrel (GB),A1 Buffer tube and Screw also from GB, New rifle spring, 1967-1969 (Wish I would have kept the paper can’t remember the actual date) buffer that I got to take out of the original packaging (which I thought was kinda cool) 3 prong FH from Trey @ Moore Millitaria, Sling swivel and gas tube pin I got from Tomball Pawn. This weekend I finally had everything together so it was prepped and all metal parts minus barrel was Dura Coated with their Colt Gray which was an almost perfect match to US Anodizing XM Gray the Dura Coat was just a shade darker but still retains the Anodizing and not a painted look, Barrel was done with Dura Heat in Mat Black which has a very gray appearance which is what I wanted. One of my favorite things about this build is that I have meet and talked to so many knowledgeable and nice people some of who have now become close friends. I apologize for the lengthy post but am just ready to get it done and out shootin. Many if not all of yalls rifles on here are great and have helped me both with a standard which I hope mine stands up to and also motivation. Again sorry for the lengthy post and Thanks.
Here are some pics I will get some more when it is all together. http://s880.photobucket.com/albums/ac6/chelweg87/?action=view¤t=RetoAR003.jpg http://s880.photobucket.com/albums/ac6/chelweg87/?action=view¤t=RetoAR005.jpg http://s880.photobucket.com/albums/ac6/chelweg87/?action=view¤t=RetoAR006.jpg Corey H |

I got a few questions on the acceptance stamps, first, where and or how do I get one, if correct for my build, also I have found little info on them when did they start using them. Early on right side, latter front of magwell? Would a early-mid XM16E1 have one?
Thanks, Corey |

Hey Corey,
There is a member here - morrie419 - contact him for info on buying the DOD stamps. There's not a lot of info on the stamps around here - only bit is on the RBR site - DOD Acceptance Stamps |

I'm on the side with guns. It's a no brainer.

I've got a dedicated 22LR upper that is lots of fun but I don't like carbines and have never really liked the way it looked. Here is the "before" picture, its a M1S 16" barrel so the FSB is .75 inch and the barrel is too fat between the legs. I added fake plastic "fake 607 handguards" but I have grown to hate them. My friend has a home made 605 replica and every time I held this thing next to it I wanted to move the FSB out to the end of the barrel so bad it was driving me crazy. We finally did it! Assemble the complete upper and use a flash hider to hold everything in place. The barrel is actually too short so threads will run into the FSB. (the chamber is further back in the upper receiver with a dedicated 22LR barrel) The front of a .625 FSB centers on the shoulder for the flash hider and there is just enough material to drill and seat the front pin into it. (the rear of the FSB floats on the too narrow barrel) When the front pin is in place, remove one hand guard so you can weld the rear of the FSB to the barrel. (things get hot, use a junk handguard) My front end cap was .75 inch and we were afraid it would be too lose on the barrel so we decided to weld it in place. Things got too hot and part of the triangle blew through. I'm not mad, my friend is mad at himself for doing it. The weld blobs behind the triangle cap prevent the hand guards from seating properly so you will have to grind some material away from the front end of each handguard. As you can see, I "sacrificed" a beater set of hand guards. They don't fit very tight so I will have to "adjust" them later. I am liking this more and more, I might commit a nicer set of handguards and try grind / weld / grind a 603 upper receiver into a 605 upper receiver. I need to to grind / weld the lower into a partial fence lower too. Looking at pictures of real 605s I'm noticing my flash hider should be closer to the FSB, right now there is one of those "thick" split washers behind it. Its the rainy season in this part of the country but we managed to get out and shoot it, works as good as it ever did.

Dodger57, did you have the lower custom anodized or did the original finish on the NDS lower wear through to the gold color? Very nice job.
Finished the 653 - photos below. Only non original Colt parts are the stock (EA for now), lower receiver (NDS). Went with a spacer instead of an extended FH to bring it to 16". Thanks.

They are pretty flexible and not very rigid on the open bottom portion if that matters to you. I bought one for my A2, but due to its aforementioned flexibility, I never used it. I still love the look of it though. Those large holes scream machine gun. If you want, I can install it on my A2 and take pictures. |

The rest of the gun is parkerized which is gross to me on a Russian Type III. I'm going to sandblast and polish the whole rifle and then try to do a glossy black oxide or have it professionally hot blued. Also going to have the furniture refinished. I've always wanted a "new" looking Type III. |

It uses an A2 FSB, so that area is thicker and its A2 profile up to the FSB. I didn't know that till i saw it, but I wan't going for a pure 100%, i wanted versatility of ammo for my first one. Lower is NDS XM16E1, JUST came in today. Looks really good! I love the 603. |
