This is a brief summary of the modifications I performed on my rifle today. You can click on the pics for larger images.

Before the madness started, my rifle was pretty much stock Bushmaster. It left the factory as a 16" post-ban .308 flat top carbine with an A2 stock.

Now, it sports a free floating rail, the RS2 from SWS (Thanks, sniperx!) fit for my Bushmaster. It was the first one installed on a Bushmaster carbine. The new collapsible stock is the LMT SOPMOD Buttstock which I got from G&R Tactical (Thanks, C4iGrant!). The only thing I am waiting for is a new buffer tube from Slash before I can try this new combo out.

Mounted up front is the new .308 Vortex flash hider from Smith Enterprises.

It is also sporting some rail covers from Tango Down. The front BUIS is the Mangonel from DPMS. With it mounted on the forward part of the rail, I can cowitness through the Aimpoint.

Up top is the venerable Aimpoint ML2, soon to be replaced by a TA11E ACOG. The BUIS is a ARMS #40. The grip has been replaced with the more comfortable and infinately more useful Tango Down Battlegrip. The H&K style sling plate is from Yankee Hill.

This shot gives a good overall picture of the entire rifle.

That is the best looking Bushy .308 that I have seen! You should be very proud of her.

The front is a DPMS Mangonel, which I am not crazy about. The large thumbscrew has a tendancy to back out under rapid fire. Also, the two different heights drive me crazy when I need to deploy the irons. It seems it always locks into the first slot, designed for the gas block. I would mount it on the gas block, but it doesn't seem to agree with the height of the Bushmaster gas-block, thus it is mounted on the rail.

The rear is the #40 unit from ARMS.

I am seriously considering replacing the rear with a solid, non-flip up unit from LMT or LaRue and changing the front to a simpler unit like the one from Yankee Hill.

Just dropped her on the bathroom scale (not scientific) and it showed 10.5lbs with a full mag and everything shown in the picture (Aimpoint, etc)

Jwolf,  I went to the SWS web site looking for that free floating rail  you have and im not sure on which one you have. I also have a 16 inch bushy 308 like your and would like to put that  free floating rail on. Could you please post a direct link to the rail?   Thanks

jwolf - This is a great looking set-up!  Do you have a range report for us?  If she runs as slick as she looks, I'd like to copy it.  Did you install the FF rail or did sniperx do the work?  The pictures and instructions at SWS look complicated for a weekend hack like myself (Sniperx, do you offer installation service?).  I thought the SWS site indicated that Tango Down covers won't fit on their carbine rails, did this change?  Last, did you get the buffer and new tube from Slash?  Thanks for posting all of the great pics.

sniperx installed the tube for me. On their website they mention free installation if you send in your upper. I thought it would have been too hard to install it myself. I'm glad he was able to take care of it for me.

They were tight but they fit OK. They certainly didn't slide right on, but I used a small block of wood and a mallet to coax them into place. Once they go on once, they are easier to take on on and off.

Yes. It looks great! The factory buffer would have been WAY too long to fit in the short stock. I will definately update this thread with a range report as soon as I get out there. Hopefully tomorrow

jwolf, any range time/report?  Is your barrel chrome lined like Bushmaster's AR-15 barrels?

VERY NICE!!! I am considering a 0.308 carbine, and wondered about the collapsible stock as an option vice the skeleton stock offered by Bushmaster.  Thanks for showing how and who can help. Enjoy.

I love the VLOTRs, but the reason I went with the LMT was the rubber recoil pad. It seemed more 'compatible' with the .308.

Figure around $2500 (+ whatever optic you decide) on will get you a rifle looking exactly like mine.

The recoil is not that bad at all. The rubber plate on the LMT stock soaks up the recoil quite nicely. Even before that, the Bushy didn't kick all that much. I've been told it was the tamest shooting .308 AR they've shot by numerous people who shot my rifle at the range.

I got some range time in this past weekend. I was going to make a new thread with pictures as soon as I had time, but I will summarize for now.

It shoots great!!!

I put 250 rounds of 168gr BTHP through it without a single hiccup. This is a real testament to Slash's stainless buffer. Needless to say, I was very impressed with the entire package. I shot ~2.5MOA at 100yds, though a more talented shooter could probably have achieved much better results. I shot from prone (using the bipod) and standing and the rifle handled great.

Everything performed flawlessly and exceeded my expectations! I can't wait to return this weekend with more ammo.

Regarding whether or not it has a chrome lined barrel; no it does not. I didn't find a problem with this when I first got the rifle, nor do I see it as one now, with roughly 1200 rounds through it.

Did you use a standard carbine buffer spring or did you have to cut coils off the rifle length spring. My 20" goes out to Art at SWS this week to get the rail done and I've got one of Slash's buffers en route. Thanks....

I cut coils off the rifle length spring per Slash's instructions. I cut it down to ~20 coils.

It's not all that bad.  I have a BAR-10A2 with 16" barrel and Izzy muzzle brake.  It does kick more than a .223.  When compared to my accurized M1A, a 120 round range session with my Bushmaster is about as tiring as a 60 round session with my M1A.

For $2500 plus optics - I sure hope that 2.5 MOA is you and not the rifle. Your choice of ammo is good, 168 HPBTs are great in the 308, but could you bench it with a vise or a very experienced shooter so we can get an idea of what the Bushy can do (I want to buy one)

Take into account that he is firing a 16 in barrel.  the most accurate barrel for the .308 is 20 in.   he is also firing a semi auto, carbine.  this gun is not supposed to be a sniper rifle.  This gun is designed to be your best friend when you kick in a door and actually want the bad guy to go down.
