I don't think I ever had a A1 trap door buttstock that did not have a crack it in some where. There is a reason why they don't make those anymore.
Did the bolt-carrier group come with it? (I did a lot of business with CDNN back when I had my FFL-- great people to deal with!)
I've got two A1 butts from them and both have the crack. It's really no biggie.
And NO! They don't come with the bolt groups. CDNN has sold off all of those. I wish I had bought two more! |
Sweet! I hope mine is at my doorstep this weekend. If they are really that nice I will probably sell one of my SAR-1's to buy a second one, and then figure out how to get a third one without the wife beating me to death with them!
Thats only the second time I've ever seen a Delta ring like that.
where can I get one of these?.I need a link please....how much are they btw?
They are listed for $399 minus Bolt/BC charging handle.
Same price for Colt M16A2 uppers. I hope to get a minty A1 upper before it's too late. |
I've got one that isn't cracked, but it's a brand new NOS piece still in the wrap (plate and trap door only). I've got two other trapdoor A1 stocks and both have cracks. |
Thats why you saw so many A1s with 100mph tape repair jobs in Vietnam.
The old phenolic resin material used to make the pre-A2 stocks wasnt very durable. |
Excuse my noob ignorance, but why was I under the impression that the M16A1 lacked the forward assist? I thought that was one of the things the added with the A2? No? Help a newbie out...
The M16A1 had a forward assist. |
Yup Foward assist was a A1 improvement.
The original AR15/M16 up untill '67 was slabside. |
Ahh, OK, that makes sense then. I need to read up a bit on my AR history. Thanks for the correction! |
Hell yeah, I was just thinking the same thing! |
I purchased 2 of these units from Kissler about a year ago. They came with Colt M16 bolt carriers and charging handles for $499 each. Both were brand new and unfired. Gotta love the tear drop forward assist. Wish I could've purchased a couple more at the time.
I thought M16 carriers were illegal for ordinary citizens to posess since they are considered to be machine guns according to the gospel of the Bushmaster catalog?? |
That brings back memories. I qualified with an M16A1 and carried one for a while before the A2's came out.

Couldn't stand it any longer. I had to borrow some money to pay damn taxes this year so I borrowed a little more and ordered me one of these. I hope it looks as good as the uppers that are pictured on this thread. I've already got a Colt lower ready and waiting. I also had a bolt, carrier and CH from an old SP1 I had several years ago put back. So I'm ready go, I can't hardly wait!!!!!

All I want is the receiver and the slip ring...and I can't find one anywhere.
I used to have a Colt Match Target that I used for High Power matches a few years back in highschool...it had an A1 butt stock, and there were no cracks. |
I'm just wondering did colt ever make a AR15A1 upper with the small front take down hole for the civilian market? I bought a brand new one like you have, complete with a M16 bolt group, the upper was sealed in plastic, I thought hmmmm maybe this is a M16A1 upper, but the box clearly said AR15 upper receiver on the flap, so I have my hunch that maybe these aren't real M16A1 uppers, but commercial AR15 uppers.
it is nice, and shoots great........the only thing is it looks like a two-tone car, gray upper black lower |
The box may not be factory colt. My CDNN upper is definitely M16A1, but the box was marked SP1, and it is a new box
Received my M16a1 upper from Cdnn today. The only thing I can say about these uppers are damn!!!!!!. If anybody wants to put together a retro rifle they had better snag one of these before they're gone. The particular upper I received is perfect. I can't find a thing wrong with it. If it will shoot the way it looks, it will be a heck of a rifle. I'm definantly glad I bought one. Shoot! I’d buy another just for the principal of things if I had the extra cash.

If these are true M16A1 uppers (which they appear to be), then the barrel would be 1/12
I don't think there ever was one until after the ban(small hole lower) Supposedly the elusive "White label" guns were all mil spec but I have never seen proof of their existence. As far as two tone most of the uppers and lowers in the military don't match either. |
They are weak sisters, there is a reason why they don't make em anymore. |
Yep, looks like mine. They are purdy cool though. |
Both my 16s currently wear A1 buttstocks. I also have a spare that I got from CDNN. None of these three have any cracks.
Buttstocks seem to be a matter of personal preference. I find the A1s to provide good consistent cheekweld, along with optimal LOP for me. I also like the reduced ROF provided by the full length buffer. Sam |

Whoa Nellie!!! The XM16E1 which came out in '64-5 had FA |
pix of my build to come as soon as the photo server will let me upload
I saw your post on your rifles. Excellent build. I order a Stag lower like yours. I will be refinishing the lower to match the upper this weekend. I hope it comes out half as good as your rifles did. DeMarcus |

thanks! are you going to use the parker or the colt grey? Or something else?
Mega Machine's slabside lowers are beginning to trickle out now. I just put what I believe to be the first one on a pending 4473, and it will look great on my upper build (as yet unfinished-- pics as it happens). The one thing is, Layne left the "gator" cuts on the front. I'll be talking to him and Clint Carrico later this week and will see if I can convince Layne not to cut the frontstraps. Quality is right up to the usual Mega standards-- which means, damn it's fine!

I was going to try Norrell (GRAYISH-BLACK Flat) because I already have experience with OD Green Norrell & liked the result. I'm going to run a test peice to see if the Norrel matches the CDNN upper. If it doesn't, I may try Duracoat. I've seen your lowers & one other guy's lower refinished with Duracoat to match the CDNN uppers & they all looked great. I may regret not trying it. |

What lower did you use? |

The first DoD procurement contract signed and delivered to Colt's in 1963 for 104,000 M16 and M16E1 rifles. 85,000 M16E1s with forward assist, 19,000 M16s with no FA for the Airforce. |

Airbrush & 300 degrees for 1 hour. I used stickman's tips: www.pre-ban.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=19024 |

CZ don't check in very often, but sure looks like a Colt's Match Target lower to me. |
