A friend of mine is in the market and likes: Stag Arms Model 2H Upper Half 16 inch chrome lined barrel, 1:9 twist, 5.56mm; rear Back-up Iron Sight  (BUIS), bolt/carrier, charging handle.

Legal Transfers sells them for around $ 504. Friend is a weekend shooter.

I have the same and am fine recommending it to him. However, are there any lower priced options that may be a good substitute?

STAG is a great company.

That said I got a guy a DSA here at work and its done well for him and is dirt cheap.

While many will chime in recommending a Spike's upper from AIM, arguably the best deal running, it does not include a rear sight and is therefore more expensive ($480 + rear sight).

The only cheaper upper I can think of, aside from searching the EE for cheap parts/uppers, is a DSA upper.
DSA upper $275 (or chrome-lined model $325)
DSA BCG $110
Charging handle $14
Rear MBUS or carry handle(EE) $45
Total = $444 (+ $12 or so shipping)

Spikes is going to be hard to beat without compromising quality.   Stag is fine too, but spikes is closer, or is mil spec.

there are also used colt, bcm, fn, uppers on the EE for your price range or less.  just ensure you are getting a decednt BCG.  S&W makes some decent stuff too.

The words cheap and AR should never be in the same sentence unless its used quality parts with spikes uppers the price they are just save a little more and buy once.

If he can round up the few extra $$ for a rear sight, Spike's is the way to go.

OTOH, I ordered a Stag 3H upper from Legal Transfers (same as the 2H, except for the gas block/FSB) and have been very pleased with the quality of it.

One of those will make you happy.

Midway sent some email advertising a $399 DPMS A3 upper. Might want to look into that. If he's just playing around that should work.

*Edit* Nevermind. It's not an M4 like you asked, none the less a decent deal for a starter. Here it is.

Another decent option, same price as the DSA. The DSA has a nitride coated barrel where the DPMS is bare chromoloy. However, Midway has coupons floating around(get on their email list or bust out the google-fu) where you should be able to get another $25-50 off.

as I stated earlier, it doesn't include rear sights making it more expensive than the Stag the OP mentioned, though it'd be my personal choice at only a few bucks more.

Same here, my wife bought me a $265 non chromed M4 upper for christmas last year and it has ran great for me. That said by they time you buy the BCG and charging handle you will be almost into the price range of the stag and I think I would spend the extra for the stag.

OP the stag would probably be the cheapest new upper of decent quality you will find. I am a huge fan of stag, I would steer him into that upper if I were you.

Non CL though. I have one of these and it's yet to fail me in the 1k rounds I've put through it.

Could always throw together one of the DSArm's $275 uppers, a Magpul BUIS and a BCM BCG for about $460 give or take some shipping costs..

You could get a complete CMMG Bargain Bin rifle, buy him a Matech BUIS off of the EE, and still have a dog's breakfast complete lower knocking around for very little more:

CMMG Bargain Bin Chrome-lined M4

If he's not bent on chrome-lined, they have their WASP versions for $50 less than the above.  The WASP versions are also 1:9 rather than 1:7, though.

I think there's a cottage industry in buying CMMG Bargain Bin rifles, pushing out two pins, and then posting the uppers on Gunbroker.

There may be less expensive substitutes, but the Stag is a good buy. I'd gladly guide a friend toward the Stag knowing he would be getting a reliable well made upper at a decent price. Cheaper is not always better especially when talking firearms.

Reliable, Accurate, Cheap

You can only get two of the three.

(I totally stole this from a sign I used to see in my performance auto parts store that said "Reliable, Fast, Cheap. You can only choose two of the three.")
