What do you plan on doing with your battle rifle?
A standard A2 works well, a blackout is another good one.

conventional wisdom would say one does battle with a battle rifle haha

Vortex is tops if you're looking for non NFA flash supression.  Phantoms get you 90% the way there at half the cost.

+1

Vortex is my personal choice.  The Phantom 5C1 looks/works great, though.

If you plan on getting a suppressor I would go with a blackout then.

No first hand experience, but I would guess a silencer would do a pretty decent job.  Any first hand knowledge?

For effectiveness at flash suppression, the Vortex is superb.  The AAC Blackout is supposed to be as good if not even better but I haven't tried one personally.

Honestly I would go with the phantom brake

part muzzle brake part flashhider ATF says its a brake

best of both worlds lower felt recoil, quicker follow ups, and less muzzle rise, with little extra noise and very little flash

Of course it has to be said sometime... battle rifle is a rifle chambered to 7.62mm or such 'rifle' round.

Assault rifle is what the M16 would be.

Yours is a rifle.

But of course this is simply semantics :D

I honestly like my A2 just fine. It's cheap, does what it's supposed to, and has been doing it that way for years.

I like YHM Phantoms.
Surefire is another newcomer that is pretty good.

Oh, now that's just plain MEAN...

I've had good luck with both the SC1 and just got a one of the PWS 5.56 that I put onto my Larue upper.  I also have a Vortex on a RRA, but I haven't had it out shooting yet.

There was a thread that showed nighttime pics of all the various flash-hiders being shot and how much the flash was muted.  IIRC the Vortex had the most reduction.

I have the Vortex, it works.

Here's a 16" barrel firing XM193 ammo.

I remember that thread, I thought it was from a 10 or 11 inch barrel. yea, see that barrel? I thought it was one of Bushmaster's carbon pistol barrels.

There was a thread at M4Carbine that used a 10" for the testing.

the aac blackout did real well in those tests also,,someone had pictures comparing them with the others,,it appears to me for the most flash reduction,, go with either a vortex or aac blackout

Depends on the "rifle".

Something chambered in 5.56 with a 20" barrel, I'd just use an A2.  However, something chambered in 5.56 with a 12" barrel ... then I'd want something different.

What are the specs for your "battle rifle" upper ?

Go with the AAC Blackout.  I just installed on my rifle a few months ago and have been very impressed with the results. I replaced a phantom that I had on there which was good, but the blackout is better IMHO.  You never know when you might want to get a suppressor either.  Do it right the first time and set your rifle up for it greatest potential.

Anyone have experience with the Troy Medieval? That is what I was looking at, but also been considering the Phantom.

Thanks for the replies. This will be on a 5.56 rifle that I'm building for my son. I have AAC blackouts for my 762SD that runs on an AR10 and an AR15. I like the performance without the can also but they are kind of hard to locate right now. I read on this board that a combat vet did not like the flash suppressors with the open slots on the end for fear of it getting caught on something. That's one of the reasons I asked the question. The Vortex seems to be the most popular one. I would rather spend the money on quality and function rather than bling.

Thanks again for the responses.
