I'm looking at a new Bushmaster A3 with a 11.5 inch barrel with a permanant 5inch flash suppresor attached...Anyone have one of these? Hows it function?

They breathe fire, hurt your ears and they are as long as a 16 inch barrel with an A2 FH.  Don't waste your time.  They have all the disadvantages of both the 11.5 and the 16 inch, and none of the advantages.

On the other hand they look cool (if that sort of thing matters to you), feel shorter (even if it is only an illusion) and are fun to shoot. I have a preban Colt with that setup and it does all I need it to so I'm quite happy with it. I have to agree about the noise, though. I fired one experimental shot outdoors with no hearing protection on the Fourth of July and my ears were still rattling long after the tree leaves stopped.

Choate used to make a 5.5" replica with the threads in the front, so it attached to a 16" barrel and looked like an XM177. Thats a better bet.

Bushmaster sells the slipovers as does MidwayUSA.

What caliber?

I was talking with Kurt about getting a 5.5 slipover made for my .45 AR. He recommended going with the 11.5/5.5 setup.

I have one and I love it................build it and silver solder it as well, when you want to SBR it you just remove it and you dont have to buy another barrel. here is mine.................

Sweet rifle Donovan!

Jack, questions. Why is it louder and why does it breath fire? The "muzzle" is in the same place? I dont get it.

Oh, and anyone know where to get a lightweight 11.5'' bbl?
Link Posted: 9/10/2005 4:05:17 AM EDT
[#8]
the bbl. is 11.5 the rifle has 5.5 of wider can to travel so imo it intensifies it all.

i like them! fun gun mainly though

i have talke to jt distributing and he says there will be lightweight, a1, 11.5+5.5 chromelined available in a few weeks

I have a few, and while they may not be my "go to gun", they are fun guns to shoot.  I've never seen much of an issue with the increased loudness, as I really don't think it is that much worse.  Maybe I just don't pay enough atention, but they are nothing like those horrid Y comp'd barrels...

Here is a picture of one that I was playing around with mounting an optic on top......

I'll be waiting then.

Thanks for the info. JT has chrome lined heavy 11.5 bbls for a great price. Cheap enough it's better to buy one of theirs than send mine to ADCO for a shorten and turndown.

I have the DPMS Panther Carbine (Pre-ban) with the 11.5" bbl and 5.5' FH. I LIKE IT! It is an SBR, but with a longer permanently attached FH, thus making it  legal length. Never noticed the degree of loudness, but I can tell you that a 16" bbl with a Miculek is considerably louder. My next DPMS AR (AP4 Panther Carbine) is going to have the 16" bbl with a Phantom FH. This one is being built for a different purpose.

Do the new Bushmasters have any reliability issues because of the shorter barrel? (like the old days) Will one of thoses slip over fake 5.5s work on a Colt 9mm barrel? Anyone have a  new bushmaster setup like this?

i though the i.d. of the 5.5 flash hider was big enough to allow the passing of a 9mm round? the only poblem is the 1/2-28 threading on the flash hider not mating with the threads on the 9mm barrel.

I've got a Bushy 1/7 barrel like that.  I put it together so that I can test heavy loads with a short barrel.  Since I live in the PR of MI, I can't be trusted with an SBR, so I chose the only route I could legally take.  It's fun to shoot (as if anything isn't) and it accurate.  I'm interested in muzzle and downrange velocities.  Some day, I'll set up some chronos and finish the project.  I've only had it for a year or so.

I e-mail J&T about the lightweight bbls and they said they have them in stock now.

The email ALSO said I better have my paperwork ready when I call or be an FFL because it's an NFA item. I sent them an email back telling them my intentions for the bbl, I'll let you know when I get a response.

Here is a 45acp w/ 10" bbl and 6.1" FH, perm. attached. BBL was cut a little short by previous owner so a custom FH was needed.

my email:

Hi Judy,
Thanks for the quick response to my query on the availabilty of 11.5" lightweight barrels..
I dont plan on using the 11.5 barrel on an SBR. I have a 5.5" flash hider and silver solder paste waiting for it.
I'm familiar with NFA law and as long as the FS is permanently attached it isnt an SBR. ATF accepts the silver solder method as permanent and I used this method to attach fake flash suppressors during the ban. As long as I attach the FS before I install the barrel, I'm good to go as far as NFA goes.
Do you have a problem with this?
captainpooby

their reply:

Pooby,

I asked my boss and he said that it would be okay.

Thanks,
Judy

Looks like I'm good to go.

I can see why they cover their bases, I've never heard of ATF visits as being happy experiences, even when the company is totally above board.

Please start a new thread and give us some intel when its arrives, and you get some free time.

I ordered it this morning via ground shipping.
I asked and he said he'd put a triangle HG cap on it for me. Now I have to spend $75 on the Total Silence shorty HGs.

I'll start another thread with pics when I get it and install it.

Like stated above, no issues with "breathing fire" or "hurting my ears".  I have one and have noticed NO additional fireball or increased noise.

Chrony tests with MY handloads showed a loss of @175 to @200 FPS with various loads as compared against 16" barrels.  For general shooting, 2875 FPS vs 2700 FPS is a non-issue.  IMO, no big loss as far as hunting is concerned either.

Those guys are pussies, mongo.

I've had a class3'd XM177E2 clone for 25 years, and it's still my favorite AR.  Sure, it's a bit louder than a 20 inch barrel, but hell, if you're wearing a decent pair of ear muffs,  the difference is meaningless.  And if you're not wearing ear muffs, you're endangering your hearing with an 11.5 OR a 20 inch barrel.

Mine isn't unusually loud either.  Not the ideal setup, but it shoots just fine and looks neato.

I have one on my colt. I like the combo, actually. Its not that loud, and it looks good. The main reason I got it, however, is when I get my SBR paperwork, I just have to remove the FH...

Here's my first AR that I had built on a SGW/OLY reciever back in 87-88'.  Yes, they are louder than either a 14.5,16 or 20".  But a 10" is even louder and flasher because the unburnt powder is burning in the air.

Here's mine. It's a 2004 Cav Arms SEBR Lower with a Bushy Upper. Haven't shot it yet, so I can't comment on Loudness or Accuracy. It will be on the EE soon as I have other projects..

I bought a new Bushmaster 11.5 w/5.5 fh a month ago but havent gotten to the range yet. I did however put 3 rounds down the barrel on a piece of empty property I'm working on with no problems. I've always owned Colts w/16" or 20" barrels. I hope to get to the range this Sat. I will keep you posted on the outcome.

This gun isnt that bad.. And I shoot inside.. But I am behind it, its pretty brutal if you are NEXT to it..

I have the Bushmaster -- I have had no problems with it with about 700-800 rounds of either Q3131A or Norinco through it.  It doesn't seem to be 'extra' loud or have any more recoil than any other AR -- I may get another one, and like the extra weight on the barrell end -- I just like 'em.

i have a mut-gun that looks EXACTLY like M700's above [except the Vltor and Magpul are black].

not only is it my favorite gun, it's also one of my most accurate.

more importantly, i put more rounds through that gun then any other and i've never had any failures of any sort, regardless of ammo.

Mines an oldie pre 94 and has functioned flawlessly. 2-2.5 moa at 100 yards not bad for a shorty. Very comfortable to carry and shoot in confined conditions. Should be part od any  AR collection

Total Silence Inc manufactures 9mm XM177E2 moderators. Just make sure when you order them you specifically request the 9mm calibre. With regards to Bushmaster offering them, no I do not believe so. With regards to reliability problems on a 11.5"/5.5" setup, the only thing I would recommend having is an H buffer. Otherwise, you should be fine.

Well I went to the range and put about 150 rounds through it with noooooooooo problem at all,I'm very happy with my new Bushmaster! As far as the cheap red dot I bought I think I'll save it for the garbage man and save up for something better. I ran 4 different types of ammo in her including wolf poly and did I mention no problems. Good luck with your decision.

Hi All.  I had a 11.5 w/5.5 inch supressor and it looked very cool.  However if I had to buy it all over again, I would rather have a 14.5 inch barrel with Bushmaster's permanently attached Phantom suppressor to lengthen it to the legal 16 inch minimum.  No SBRs allowed in my state.

If the length HAS to be there, it is better to have a velocity boosting barrel than a noiser carbine.

I have built and shot the rifle too. My face is very red here and I promise pics tomorrow.

It is now my favorite rifle over my M4gery. Super light and I dont have any idea where the flamethrower/loudness guys are coming from. Mine does neither and I was shooting at dusk.

I swear it's the best carbine I ever owned. It's light, handles fast and is accurate as any other AR I own. If I had to pick one gun out of my collection, this would be the one.

Pics tomorrow, I promise.
