I decided a couple of months ago that I wanted to do a project that was decidedly "non-tactical". I've always liked the look of carbon fiber, so that's the route I took. The carbon fiber FF tube was easy enough to acquire, but NOBODY makes a carbon fiber stock. I ran across a compnay called Phoenix Imaging www.phoenix-image.com/Index2.htm on one of the automotive boards, and learned that they apply custom hydro-graphic finishes. I talked to them about applying their carbon fiber finish to an A2 stock, and they said that they could make it happen. So for your viewing pleasure............

This is the run down: CMT upper and lower receivers Phoenix Imaging A2 stock Hiperform carbon fiber FF tube GG&G GS-1 rail ARMS #22 rings Leupold 4.5-14X50 LRT scope ERGO grip JP drop-in match trigger (Thanks C4iGrant! )JP SS bolt carrier ROBAR NP3 coated CMT bolt Wilson Combat magazine release PRI SS gas block PRI QC muzzle break PRI gasbuster charging handle .....Still working on the barrel, but it'll be an 18" match tube. ***UPDATE*** I'll be installing a Noveske Rifleworks SPR barrel on this rifle. Pics of the completed rifle will follow.

That is pretty damn cool.
I like it, although, my rifle has been known to take a bit of a beating on long camping / hiking trips....that virgin shiny finish wouldnt last long on my furniture...but I do like the looks of it. Sweet build!

I like the invisible receiver pins and mag release.
 Nice rifle. I'm not to big on the exposed carbon, but that's pretty freaking cool. |

Can you tell us how much it costs to have them do a stock set?
I have been thinking about have this done to a set of AR-10B stocks, but price would have a lot to do with my decision. Thanks! |

The A2 stock was $130. I'm guessing that you could have them finish a stock and handguard for around two bills. This is a professional finish, and VERY high quality. It's also not as shiny as it looks. |

Looks sweet, but kinda needs the pistol grip in carbon fiber to complete the look.. prolly be damn near impossible to coat the TD battlegrip in that stuff.. wouldn't it?

That's pretty sweet. What's the weight on that stock set??? I'd like to see that applied to a m4 front stock. And a little flatter on the finish. I bet that set you back a pretty penny though! nice!

or did you use the stock to make a mold? if so, what was used (foam, etc.) to fill it? |

NOBODY is / will make a carbon fiber stock.  I got tired of asking. The A2 stock has a "Hydro-Graphic" finish. Basically, they paint the item the base color, and dip it in a water tank that has the carbon fiber finish desolved on the surface. The carbon fiber finish coats the item, and then a clear coat finish is applied and the item polished. |

Now we know where all your money goes! My last car was a Honda Accord. There were no "exterior" modifications, but the engine bay and suspension were definitely not factory. Do companies like TRUST / PORTFLOW / FERREA / WEB / CROWER / WISECO / EIBACH / ST ring a bell?

Looks good. I've always liked the look of carbon fiber. Never thought of it on an AR though. Non tactical but nice. Would be good on a tricked out compitition gun.

I'll bet there would be a decent market for carbone fiber stocks, handguards and tubes. The sheen (shine if you must) does not need to be present, and could be taken down with light blasting, or by not applying the top coat in a gloss.
Eventually, someone will tap into this market and will clean up. I would bet that the cost would not even have to be that extreme. |

If you are talking about the FABARM sporting clays shotguns that used to be imported by HK, that wasn't CF. That was a CF looking film applied with the same process used to apply camouflage patterns on guns. The stock and forearm on the Benelli above don't look like carbon fiber. They ARE carbon fiber. |

My local FFL / Benelli rep says that's a negative. The carbon fiber finish on the Benelli SS is just like the camo finish; it's a coating. |

Only one way to find out for sure, look on the inside. I have a fair idea of what it should look like on the unfinished side, as I used to work in aerospace and the fuselages of some of the planes they made were CF. For what Benelli charges, that shit damn well better be the real deal...... |

I found this while Googling for carbon fiber stock info.
You could get an A1 pistol grip, sand the raised checkering off and have the same hydro-graphic finish applied to that. Heck, is there any reason you couldn't have the upper and lower hydro-graphically refinished? My brother-in-law works for a company that develops and sells cutting software. I asked him what the thought it would take to cut out adhesive backed carbon-fiber "decals" to cover AR15 stocks. He thought it would be a piece of cake with their software and a knife or laser plotter. They already have customers cutting carbon fiber that way. I'd prefer "real" (as opposed to cosmetic) carbon fiber furniture. I think Stickman is right. There is a niche market here waiting to be tapped... |
