OK, I headed out to the range today with my 2 J&T/STAG builds. I had not fired the 20" HBAR A2 until today. I started off at the 50 yard range to battle sight both weapons using the Radway Green 62gr surplus I picked up from AIM (I have another case coming and I might just need to grab a couple more). After I got both sets of irons shooting where I wanted I put the T168 on the 20" HBAR (Be careful not to overtighten, when it snugs with an allen wrench STOP. Ask me how I know). Thankfully there are 3 mounting holes. The weather was not the best for this, very muggy and gusty winds but here are the results.

The best group overall was 1.3" center to center.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/johnrippert/T168A2b.jpg

The group that could have been the best was 1.9" center to center but subtract the flyer (wind gust and trigger jerk, the jerk being me) it was .9"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/johnrippert/T168A2a.jpg

I see no reason why with calm conditions I cannot get 1.5" out of this setup at 100 yards. I think that is amazing out of a kit barrel with surplus ammo.

The lightweight barreled CAR was shooting 2" groups with the T168 on and the POI from swapping the scope from the HBAR to the CAR was 3-4 inches higher and right on line. The trigger on the CAR is nowhere near as good as the HBAR, there is some gritty creep at the beginning and then it breaks clean. I am waiting on a RRA 2-stage trigger for the HBAR and the CAR will be the recipient of the trigger from the HBAR.

That is some very fine shooting, JR.

It must be quite gratifying to score hits like this with a firearm you built yourself.

well when the real shooting starts, I know whose side I am on!!

Good shooting.  Pics of the rifles would be nice also and pics of the "Be careful not to overtighten, when it snugs with an allen wrench STOP. Ask me how I know" would also be nice.

I'm assuming it has something to do with stripped threads and a bunch of words you wouldn't wnat to say in church

You can see the hole in the side of the thumbscrew. When I first put it on I only hand tightened it and the scope was slightly canted and would work a little loose after cycling the action and dry-firing a few times. So I then took an allen wrench and was able to get about a half a turn tighter before it snugged up good. I then removed the scope until I got to the range and finished sighting in my irons. When I installed the scope at the range I gave it a bit too much pressure with the allen wrench after it snugged up tight and, *wahlah*, instant stripped threads. After I moved it to the center set of threads I was much more careful.

I tired out the T168 on an A2 today. Carry handle mount. It was so windy that I didn't even try to put out any paper targets. Instead I did a rough zero by plinking at rocks on the mountainside. Once it was "zeroed" it was no problem to hit softball to football sized rocks out to 200 yards.

You can see the irons through the base.

And some gratuitous gun PORN:
I also took Big Brother to the range with his 2 little brothers.

Is that a soft aluminum casting?  If I had one, I might Helicoil it right away and eliminate this problem, but I have Helicoils readily available to me, so that helps.

I had similar success with the T168 at the range today. The optics were comparably clear to my Leupold Vari series scopes.  What a value for only $40!

Does anyone know if any of the ACOG mounts will fit the T168?  The flattop adapter looks exactly like the Trijicon TA51 but I'm not sure of the measurements. I would love to get an ARMS 19 or LaRue ACOG mount for this great deal!

BTW, here are some pics from the range today:

$40?  Tapco has them listed on their website for $69 right now.  Did they bump the price up?

Yeah, they weren't the greatest so maybe I'll find some nice Butler flip-ups for them.

ClearView Investments is the one that's selling them for 40 bucks. Here's the link:

Quick question for those of you with this scope,

Does it have distinct clicks when making changes in elevation and windage, or do they feel mushy/non-existant like a lot of low priced optics do? This seems like a very good and rugged optic considering the price, and based off the reviews from this and a related thread.

Since it is made to fit directly into a carry handle, I would think it would go into a LaRue or ARMS Acog mount with no problems. Seriously considering getting one for my upcoming deployment.

Trgams,
Yes, you are correct. That's a 100m target.

Regarding the clicks, it does click and it's not mushy. It could be me but the clicks don't feel too solid. Kinda cheap feeling actually. But it has held zero so hopefully that continues.

I was stoked to buy one, but then I found out it was made by Leapers.

I'm skittish. The last leapers scope I had ended up in the range trash can the first time I tried to zero it. It would not hold zero for squat. I'm very skeptical of chinese made scopes like Leapers after that.

I think I will wait and read a few more reviews before I bite.

Yup it is a Leapers , but I was skeptical about a $40 scope  in general let alone "that " brand . I bought one and I actually like it  . It zeroed easily (3 shots to find a hit  , then two more  to zero at 100 yards ) .  I removed and reinstalled, and it holds the zero to boot . Probably won't ever use the illumination , but it is there if I want too .  This may be the sleeper in their scope line .

I took mine out on Sunday it it worked well.
I mounted mine on the carry handle of DPMS A2 and had it sighted in within the first 8 rounds at 100 yards.  Beer and soda cans out to 150 yards was easy when I did my part behind the trigger and hit the 8" steel gong at 200 yards 18 out of 20 times... all using 20 year old SA surplus ammo.  I fired 300 rounds in 2 hours and the POI at the end did not change from the beginning.  I'll do some formal accuracy test next weekend.  Very nice scope for the price.

BTW.  couple people reported that their cross hair was crooked and I had the same problem but I noticed that there was some "play" between the carry handle and the scope mount so I just tilted the scope and screwed it on and it was strait on.

Is it just a "coolness factor"?

I have the former, thinking about trying the latter.  From the pictures here, it appears that the T168 has a better reticle and field of view than the  4x20. T168 doesn't appear to have a BDC, however, but it does have illumination.

All in all, I'm really not all that impressed with the 4x20.  It's too much of a PITA to justify it, and with it just being 4x, it's really not useful for shooting at anything I couldn't hit with irons anyway.

I just got my T168  today. The only bad thing I have to say about it is the illumiator is for shit.
Grainy and after the 2nd notch it starts to fill the tube with red glare.
Not a big deal for me as I don't plan to light it up. The glass is very clear and mildot well defined otherwise.
Not bad for $39, I must say.

I ordered two of them, they came in last Friday and I mounted one on my son's A2 and put about 100 rounds thru it last Saturday. It was super windy, so I didn't even try for a precisse zero, I just rough zeroed it and went to blasting everything I could pick out on the mountain. The only complaint i have is that it doesn't have quite enough eye relief. But other than that I'm veyr happy with it.

I've got one set up flat-top style.
2 questions:

Does anyone else have trouble clearing an ARMS #40?
I've got the scope ahead of the buis now...

Upon intitial setup, I noticed it zeroed way better with the knobs on the ejection side of the upper.
It fixed the cant issue as well...anyone experience this?

just got mine.

i'm very impressed for a $40 scope.

one immediate flaw i noticed was the wigglyness of the flip up caps and that one of the lens cover glasses actually popped out of the cover.  i hope i snapped it into place correctly, b/c it doesn't seem to move any more.  next i tightened them down a bit and they don't wiggle as much... but then they don't flip up as quickly either.  oh well, it's still excellent for $40.

the other thing i noticed (as posted in another thread i cannot find) is that the scope does not sit perfectly atop and center of the mount.   it is ever-so-slightly canted to the right, but noticeable if you look closely enough.  it seems like a design flaw b/c everything i know about scope design indicates that the scope /sight should always be perfectly lined up on the vertical axis of the barrel.  Anyway, I can only imagine this making a very negligeable difference in performance.  We'll see.  Regardless of my accuracy, i will certainly find a part of the gun to blame it on... and in this case it may be the scope.

Conclusion... From what I've seen and heard so far, I think this was one of the most cost effective purchases I've made for my AR.  I can't wait to actually use it on the range.  I have an EOTech, and was waiting and waiting for ACOG prices to come down.  For what I paid for this scope, that would have not even covered FL sales tax on the EOTech.  Now, I can wait a little longer to get the ACOG.

This things is bad ass!

I've long wondered if Clearview is selling blems or seconds. Their prices are 50% less than everyone else selling these scopes. I got mine from Tapco for $69.99 last year and never had any issues like those stated in this thread. The only issue I had was with the illumination knob coming loose but I was able to fix that myself.

I ordered mine from Clearview.  It only took them 30 days to get it right, but I finally got the Mil-Dot version.  This has incredibly clear optics for a $40 scope!  Like everyone else has mentioned the 'illumination' is pretty cheesy, it seems to be best when only barely turned on, dimmest setting.

I found that when mounting on several A2 uppers I have that the seam on the bottom/inside/underside portion of the carry handle that is on 2 of the 3 can cause the mounting screw to cant the scope.  By being careful about centering the washer on the mounting screw I was able to consistantly get a good centered mounting on all 3.

I was a bit paranoid about over tightening the mounting screw and found that I needed to retighten after every magazine.  I was shooting Q3131A so maybe something lighter like the Wolf wouldn't be so bad?

The good news is that even with all the retightening/remounting the zero never really wandered on me!  I've got to say this is a great scope for the money!  I hope to get out to the range for some 200+ yard testing soon.  I took the Mil-Dot formula from the directions along with the information from the Fragmentation Ammo thread for 16" barrels and wrote a program that computes Range and Scope click adjustment based on Ammunition Type, Size of target in inches and Mil-Dot reading.  Once I can verify with some 200+ yard shooting I'll compile a version for PocketPC and upload for additional review, right now I just have it running on my laptop.
