Your Faux Flash Suppressor is pressed onto the muzzle of your barrel. After we remove it, we are left with this:
If you'd like to keep the barrel at 16", we can do that, but it will look funny. Only the last 1/2" will be threaded. The rest of the skinny barrel and the splines will show. Functional yes, but not asthetically pleasing. So we offer the "Ugly Muzzle fix" This can also be done with the A2 flash hider. If you'd like it to look normal, we can cut it to 14.5" and perm-attach a Phantom or Vortex to bring it out to 16" OAL, or we can install a A2 FH for 16" OAL Click HERE and select Swap Phantom $90, or Swap Vortex $118, or Shorten + A2: shorten & perm-attach A2 FH $72. These options include the cost of the Phantom (or Vortex), removing the Faux Flash Hider, threading, and perm-install of the flash suppressor. If you want to keep your 16" w/a A2 barrel, select Thread & add A2 FH: 5.56 only. Not perm-attached $67, and Ugly Muzzle Fix: after RRA FFH removal $25.00. Click the load button at the bottom of the page, then follow the checkout procedure. Be sure to specify which model of Phantom you'd like (5C1, or 5C2) in the Special Instructions box on the checkout form. Submit the order and print a copy to ship along with your barrel. When we see your submitted order, and receive your barrel, we'll perform the install and have it back out the door to you within 3, or 4 days. |

I just had Adco do this work to my barrel.
Couldn't be happier with the way it turned out. Service was quick and outstanding as always. |
Are the prices the same if keeping the barrel at 16" and not cutting to 14.5?
Yes, sir. We still have to remove the FFH, turn the muzzle to .5" and cut threads. |
Can you remove the FSB over the perm. attached phantom or vortex? If not can you just cut the base of the FFH down to act as a shim on the exposed splines? I really want to be able to have a non-perm flash hider. BTW the thread depth on my A2 FH (I have one that is just waiting for a barrel to mount) was something like 3/4 inch as opposed to 1/2.

Does the chrome lining get damaged when the barrel is turned/cut down to 14.5"?

You don't happen to have a picture of a barrel treated this way? I'm just trying to imagine it in my mind's eye. Thanks. |
Not at all. Remember this is hard-chrome, not chrome plating. Also, we use precision machines to cut and crown. |
I should have a pic soon. |

Thanks for the info!
Can I send my upper assy (minus handguards and bolt/carrier assy) or do you accept only the barrel? Thanks in advance for your time and patience. Regards, Rob |

After I spoke with you on the phone i wanted to clarify my question. I am wondering if you can cut the current FFH down in length so that it can act as a spacer on the barrel and cover the splines while still having the barrel end threaded the 3/4 inch necessary to install the A2 birdcage that i have. What I invision is removing the FFH, turning the barrel down to 1/2", thread the last 3/4", cut the lenght of the FFH down and install it back over the splines and then screwing the A2 FH on with a crush washer. It might look odd, but it will not require cutting the barrel below 16" and it will not leave the splines exposed. The only additional step should be using the chop saw to cut the FFH's length. That should be simpler than and instead of cutting and recrowning the barrel at 14.5". Let me know. Thanks |

I'm talking to our machine shop about what we can do here.
I should have a answer within a few hours. Engineer: My thoughts exactly... |

That would be a good idea, but I got the impresion that making something would be more expensive than just using what is already there. I already have the FFH and the A2 (picked up the A2 at a gun show in 1993 so that if I got an AR one day I could make it right). If you chop the FFH so that the cage is gone and all you have is the base and then thread the end I don't see that as a problem for me asthetics wise. Also I don't have to BUY anything else. I just want something large enough to use as a base to tighten the A2 against. Your idea would work, but the easiest way would be to just leave the splines and shorten the FFH. Of course the Machinist has the last word on that. |

Something to cover the splines would be great. I won't go below 16" for velocity reasons so I'll have to live with the splines if I have to. I'm waiting on pics or best ideas to cover splines before I send my uppers in.
Miranthis, have you thought about using a Phantom flash hider? If you're going to the trouble an expense of sending your upper in you might as well put one on that works a lot better on a 16" barrel. |
+1 I'm in the same boat and am wondering just how bad this might look. |

Whats the turn around time on this?
By the way, I have a bag of twenty muzzle thread protectors that measure .625" long with an OD of .625 as well. The OD of my RRA behind the FFS is .700 inches by my calipers so it would leave a step but they might help. ADCO? |
I should get my Bushmaster Dissi back Tues/Wed. I plan on sending in my RRA m4 w/FFS, after I get the dissi back. I want it left at 16"+ FS. I will make sure pics get posted when I get that one back. Mine went to UPS Wed. it went back to UPS Mon. YMMV

+1
I am just waiting to hear back from ADCO. Given all the current solutions, this seems to be the most viable. If there is a way to cover the splines, that would be a bonus!! Thanks ADCO! |
would it be possible to cut down the barrel just enough so that an A2 FS could be blind-pinned and the overall legnth be 16.1 inches. What would the price be, considering the phantom cost quite a bit more than a A2 FS (and I like it better).
Just a question about turning the barrel. Do you have a pic of one chucked in a lathe? That alone, would let me know if I want to attempt this. I have access to a lathe and a skilled operator, but would like to know how it is done, first. Does the front sight assy and gas tube have to be removed to accomplish this? Do you spin the barrel or just the cutter?
Thanks. tagged |

Adco cut my barrel back to 15" and then perm. attached the A2 flash hider for an OAL of 16 1/4 inches. |
How much did this cost, if you dont mind me asking? |
The total was close to $100.00 and that included shipping/handling both ways |
I'm looking at this option too... a pic would help me decide which way to go. |
I was a little worried about the look (I just sent you guys two of them to do) but seeing the pic it looks fine to me. I'm glad I did it. I'd rather have the velocity of 16" barrel and not perm attach the FH and live with the little bit funky look.
I'm working on a 3rd option for those so inclined.
For approx. $25 extra, we should be able to have a sleeve that covers the "ugly" part, and makes it look more like a standard 16" barrel. We'll see what we get in the coming days... |
Maybe I'll think it looks bad in person, but I've always been a function over form kind of guy. I care how something works. If I want pretty I'll buy something meant to be pretty. Not a tool. Of course it wouldn't have hurt to have known a "fix" was in the works at an additional cost.
You've got two of my RRA uppers there now for removal of fake brake and installing Phantoms (along with two HBAR Bushmasters getting lighter and threaded). Let me know if you want them for trying out any sleeve work you might be thinking of trying.

Still interested in the sleeve option. Is it going to happen?
I had my barrel threaded and an A2 FH permanently attached and it looks excellent! I could not have asked for a better job! It now has the look of a 14.5" with A2 SBR. I love it!
Great job Steve and Co.! Pics to follow. |

WhooHoo, $20, to not have it "ugly" or peramnently attached. What a bargin, I get to save my light under the handgaurd, chrome lined, RRA M4 barrel. I nocked the FakeFlashHider off the other night, easier than I expected, I didn't like the look at all. I was thinking of going with a 5.5 inch FS, and cutting my barrel WAY off, I'm so glad I don't have to do that now. Thanks, barrel will be inbound soon.

Awesome, Let's do it. E-mail sent. Steve |

Great idea ADCO. I like the way you guys think. I have a suggestion.
What if you turned down the barrel between the splined area and fat portion. Turn it down to the same diameter as the splined area. Then make a collar that extends back to the fat part. The collar would match the large diameter where it mates with the "step-up" in the M4 barrel and step down just behind the FS, just like a "normal" 16" M4 barrel. The only give-away would be the seam line in the fat portion. This would give an even better profile. It would cost more but I think it would be worth it. Just my $.02 worth. I think you current collar is an awesome solution but think this might be even more pleasing to some. Ed |

Eric,
Email sent, my upper is heading your way in about a week. Great job & thanks. |
Oh sure - ya hadda go and make the "Ugly Muzzle Fix" didn't-cha ??hopping
Either way - If all goes well I hope to have it disassembled and on the way some time next week (provided I can make up my mind) To quote some others here - ADCO Rocks !!! I am also kinda curious about the suggestion ducati650 made. My only concern is the look/fit of the larger diameter of the spacer against the diameter of the FH shoulder. My only reason for leaving it 16" would be in the remotest of posibilities that I may someday put a can on it. Not very likely right now but it's nice to have the option. Maybe if you haven't gotten any other volunteers by the time I get my barrel off (and I decide to stay at 16") - I'll Guinea pig. I mean after all if it don't "look right" you can always turn down the front part of the spacer and put the new "step" in the spacer where ever you want it. |
Sweet, but I like the shorter version they did on my RRA barrel, looks so much better.
mattld, Do I have this rite? ADCO cut the barrel at 15 and permanently attached the A2? If so do you see the splines? -Thanks
