J/k I wanted your undivided attention I am not into survival, because at my age I can survive on doughnuts and coffee for years, but I saw something at Shot Show that I think you would all many of you would be interested in. GoatBoy shot video , and here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X3HcuFiAGo It is a "viral and biological water filter that filters 500 Gallons/day and the filter can be flushed back, so it needs no replacement. It is garanteed for 1 million gallons, and if it works as advertised, it would save you from having to stockpile water, leaving room for other things like food, ammo, etc. For those interested, here is the company name and website link TSSI(Tactical and Survival Specialties,Inc www.TACSURV.com GoatBoy Adding Embed Video |

Meh. I dehydrate my water. I can store 10^5 gals in a hurby curby.
However, you never know when you might need a plan B. Thanks for the link! |

looked thru their site couldn't find the filter. Got any other info.
Thanks for the heads up on the filter. Edit to correct typo |

This may be it. Looks like 380 gallons a day (PUMP, you swine!).
No specs with the item, but the one on Amazon (OOS) seems to fit. Maybe they're coming out with a SuperSize not listed on the site yet. The one above is pretty impressive. |

I asked the representative there and she said it could be used to refilter water that might have been stored but was "past due" and growing organisms, of course in a SHTF situation where it cannot be replaced. I have the literature they gave me and could mail it to one of your "fearless leaders/mods" for distribution Here is what the paper says: 0.10/0.02 Absolute micron viral-biological filters: removes 7log (99.99999%)of all bacteria like Salmonella, cholera, and E.coli.And 6log(99.9999%)of all protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium. blah, blah .02 Absolute micron viral-biological filters: -Removes sediment, bacteria, protozoa, cysta and viruses -No dwell time, no waiting-replaces chemicals, pumps and steripens -can be cleaned by backflushing One million gallon garantee.Bucket models deliver 150 gals/day (MY NOTE: the one I saw was a large bucket, maybe 20 gals? Just a thought. |

Ed and I spoke about it at the meet and greet, and I stopped by their booth the next day. The guy I spoke with did not know a whole lot about it, but from what I can tell it is the way to go. [P.S.A.]ATTN: TSSI is based here in harrisonburg, they DO NOT, do civilian sales, .gov, mil. and l.e. sales/contracts only. if you have the credentials of a purchasing agent for one of these entities you should be g.t.g. otherwise, you're pretty much s.o.l.
i know a couple of the folks whom have worked and or still do work there, a goodly number of vets and mostly really good people. if this filter is as bad ass as ed says it is, i'm sure it will be available through other distributers... [P.S.A./] K. |

It seems to me that it would be easy enough to install a 1" grommet in a collapsible bucket (canvas or ??) and stow it in a B.O.B. Here in Western Oregon we have plenty of water - - this will make sure it's safe. VERY cool!!! Thanks Ed! |

So do I go with the biological or viral filtration? Decisions, decisions.
Thanks for the tip, Ed! |

This looks like a good unit. Any way to verify their claims, as in third-party verification?
Also, what carbon filter is recommended for the water so filtered? I live next to a golf course, so I'm pretty sure the water is chock full of fertilizer/pesticides, etc... |

This an off shoot product using the Sawyer membrane technology.
We've had a number of threads on the membranes and including field tests (Protus did one). You may recall this was the double bag system that you had to apply pressure. Real book/movie "Dune" type stuff. The concept here appears to be the same thing but using the natural pressure of the 5 gallon bucket. Tj |

Will it filter brackish and/or salt water and make it potable?
|
|
I bought 6 of these. Kept two for my family, gave two set-ups to friends last year as Xmas presents and filled the pails with other survival items. And the last two I'm keeping for spares or to barter when the time is right. When water is scarce, these will be worth more then gold or ammo. I'm thinking about buying more just to keep on the shelf. For the price and what they do, they are a helluva bargain and the people selling them are doing a lot of good humanitarian work. Just ordered one from Sawyer. I'm looking forward to testing it out. This would make life much easier up at hunting camp compared to pumping water through a filter! |

Up until now that membrane technology was quite impractical. Like the Sawyer straw it was aimed at extreme survival and something for a lone guy in the boonies and barely getting by. This is something way more practical and something that can be used at home. The point is, it isn't new technology so is proven to work. Tj |
