If I remember correctly, Stoner worked on the AR1, which was a bolt action .308, and his first design was the AR3, a semi .308 and Armalite's first semi-auto gun.

The first of this "family" of rifles was the original AR10 of the late 1950s (not to be confused with the current look-alike rifle).
AR is just the first two letters of ArmaLite and doesn't describe a "family." The AR180 is the semi-automatic version of the AR18 which was developed after the AR15. They're not part of the same "family" unless you consider the Colt M1911 and Colt M16A2 part of the same "family." ArmaLite was a developmental corporation, they had only limited production facilities. -- Chuck |
