Does it make any difference if you are an LEO when it comes to the assault weapons ban.

Do the same rules apply? If not, how is it differant?

Thanks in advance.

LEOs are just like any private citizen when it comes to post-ban "semi-auto assault weapons" with two exceptions:

1) A LEO may privately purchase a restricted post-ban "saw" if the weapon is to be used for official use and not for the purpose of personal recreation or resale.  The officer's agency must provide a letter on agency letterhead signed by the officer's commander or the commander's delegate stating those two conditions.

2) Upon retirement, a LEO can have his duty weapon gifted to him from agency, along with restricted LEO mags.  For this provision, the weapon must be owned by the agency, and the LEO can't just retain his personally owned "saw" and LEO mags after retiring from the force.
