I bought a preban AR15 this week and it has a full auto bolt in it.  Is this legal or not?  I've been told it is legal in the HK91/G3 and FNFAL but was told it is not legal in the AR15.

yup keep it out also watchout on some parts kits as they sometimes include the m16 bolt without you knowing.

Get yourself a new bolt carrier assembly ASAP.

You could probably go the rest of your life with an M16 bolt carrier in your rifle and not have a problem, but it's not worth the risk!!!  I had an M16 bolt carrier assembly in one of mine for many years.  Reading ar15.com forums helped persuade me to play it safe.

A premium, brand new complete bolt carrier assembly from ArmaLite is a paltry $110.  Compare that to the expenses you would incur defending yourself against the weight of the federal government.  You would probably stay out of prison, but it would cost you thousands.

If you really want to go cheap the bolt carrier body is just $60, add $5 for a firing pin, reuse the rest and you're good to go.  [url]http://www.armalite.com/sales/catalog/components/boltcarrier.htm[/url]

There is virtually NO difference between the "M16" bolt and the "AR15" bolt..... not even ATF will be able to tell the difference.  Don't sweat the bolt.... JUST the carrier.  Check also your trigger group and selector.  Compare your parts with the diagrams available on AR15.com and make sure they are AR15 too.

I believe the only difference between the bolts is metallurgical, probably heat treatment.  Ones made for full-auto are supposedly tougher.  They are physically interchangeable, and I can't find any difference in dimensions.

An M16 firing pin has a wider flange and will not fit in most AR-15 bolt carriers.

You can modify some of of the M16-specific parts to be AR-15 legal by removing metal.  Not so with the trigger or selector.

Bushmaster sells a clamp-on gadget to convert an AR-15 bolt carrier to work in an M16.

If you are thinking of modifying an M16 bolt carrier to AR15 profile (you can do that legally) you should know they are harder than he-- and cannot be filed down.
