I've been thinking lately about the people in my life and the lies they tell. Some are pathalogical liars and will lie about unimportant trivial things just for the sake of lying.
Others lie whenever they feel it's easier than telling the truth or making someone else uncomfortable. And still others I know lie to gain an advantage in personal or business issues .
I don't get the whole lying thing.  As a matter of fact, my candidness has cost me more than one relationship and a job or two.
Anyone else have that problem?

I try not to lie. If I do it is usually something minor....like when my wife asks how much did that gun cost and I say it was cheap

when it really cost over $1000

Its relative right?

I once dated a female who was a pathological liar.

According to her, a good lie is one that has a little truth in it.

Too hard to keep track of otherwise.

I have too bad a memory to be a good liar.

I stopped lying a long time ago, it actually makes life devoid of a lot of social problems that I see so many other people dealing with on a daily basis.

Plus, it has narrowed down my friends list so dramatically that I only have a few very good ones, since they can accept the truth, and only ask me when they WANT an honest answer.

It's a predisposition that allows me a drama-free life.

I'm actually in trouble at work because I did something and incurred a 3 day suspension for it.    I thought the method I used to subdue an inmate that attacked another officer was authorized - turns out I was wrong.  And, no... I'm not going to lie and omit that from the report.

When I was asked to re-do the paperwork, I told them that I would rather be in trouble than a liar... and it's true.  So now I get to enjoy 3 days off.  In this case I could have saved myself about 150 bucks by lying.

I do my best not to lie.  I'd rather not say anything than lie, or if I have to, I'll play (sometimes it's not playing) stupid.  i don't remember where i got this from but here it is: a woman asks her husband a question along the lines of "does this dress make me look fat" or some other difficult woman question.  the husband says "honey, i don't want to lie to you" and walks out of the room.

i voted titty sprinkles.

I won't say "never", as I'm human, but it's very, very rare. I do not, however, always give the complete answer.

Seriously, you're asking people to be honest about how often they lie?

There are two types of liars.  Pathological and deliberate.

Pathological liars have no control over their lies.  It's almost as if they aren't actually lying, but rather living in an altered state of reality.  They're usually easy to spot because their lies are way off base.

Deliberate liars know exactly what they're doing.  If they're good, they won't so much as outright lie, but rather manipulate the truth just enough to meet their ends.  (Still a lie I know, but not as blatant).  There will be a large element of truth to what they say, making it difficult to distinguish what the truth really is.

He could answer no and it would be truth.  It ain't the dress making her look fat, it's her.

My general demeanor is a complete lie most of the time. I'm an expert at concealing how I feel or changing my appearance.

Outside of work I tell white lies with a bit of truth in them frequently. I have an excellent memory.

Lying at work will result in people dying so I don't lie there.

I don't think I've told a lie on ARFCOM, no reason to.

I never even told "white lies" until I was married.  Sometimes its much less complicated to fib to your wife rather than stir up a shitstorm.  You married guys know what I'm talking about.

We all lie, that's a fact.

However, the degree of the lie matters greatly.

"Honey you look fine" is a fair lie,  I graduated top of my class in Med school during your interview at the local hospital (when you are really an auto mechanic) is not a good lie.

Agreed. I am an excellent liar, (even better when drunk, although I won't lie when tired, it's too much effort) but it's something I'd rather not do. Lying for monetary gain is out of the question, though. Dunno why it's different, it just is.

Unfortunately a lot of people can't handle the truth, so I lie to them when they will refuse to listen to the truth. I don't need the hassle because they're too stupid to accept the truth, or to genuinely look at an issue. So it saves me time and effort, and saves them headache. I guess it's one of my forms of mercy.

I'm sure that sounds arrogant, but then I don't care what you peons think.

"Mercy Liar"....hmmm....sounds kinda like "Mercy Killing".

I only lie in two situations:  one, when the truth is none of the business of the person asking but saying "none of your business" would be answering their question, eg when a pediatrician asks if you have any guns in the house; and two, when the truth would needlessly hurt someone.

I would rather be honest than smashed in the head with a frozen chicken at the store 'cause a pissed client saw me.
