I vote ESL.

Quoted:
I vote ESL. Maybe a year ago when the population there was still being oppressed by a racist cracka government, but not anymore in this era of hope and change. |
I used to live in ESL as a kid. Fuck that place. I refuse to even go near that area.

Quoted:
I vote ESL. I do too because in Detroit, the good guys can carry loaded guns. Not in ESL. John |
Detroit by far,as Detroit has a helluva lot more down'n out industry.
Never been to Detroit but passed through SL a few years ago. It was truly appalling.
ESL for two reasons:
#1 - Illannoys has no CCW, so there's a better chance of being defenseless; #2 - Detroit has never gone into receivership and been forced to pay it's police and fire with vouchers (AFAIK), ESL has. |
ESL has never had to have the 82nd Abn come to the rescue either. The GM HQ? That's a facade. Go just beyond downtown, and it turns lots of ugly real quick.
I've never been to Detroit, but ESL is pretty fucking scary. Reminds me of a zombie movie.

Quoted:
How do the two compare to Nashville? Not near as bad, both ESL and Detroit have been flat out run into the ground. Don't know much about ESL,other than been there many times. But Detroit? Been there many more times than I can count. The riots of '67,inept management, white flight to the suburbs, and the up-and down fortunes of it's one industry, automobiles, have turned Detroit into a wasteland. Almost nothing is torn down, but left to rot and decay. |

Detroit has some form of industry, East Saint Louis is just full of trash.
Quoted: I'll say Memphis as my write in candidate. Not even close to ESL. Cops don't even get off the interstate in ESL. You want to be safe in ESL? Keep rollin on the interstate until thru it. |
Ive been through both cities and from my observation Id say per capita, ESL, but Detroit is worse overall simply because its a bigger city.
I lived in St Louis for 2 years, and once accidently (right after I moved there) missed my exit on the interstate, and the next exit was in East St Louis. I got off there to find out the onramp was closed, and I had to drive around for 10 minutes, a white guy in a lifted Land Rover, looking for the way back onto the interstate the right direction. I had a taillight out and was CCW. It was the first time I was really not concerned at all about being pulled over, even though I was suddenly in a state where I couldn't legally carry the HK strapped to my belt. I was rather, instead, greatful to be armed.
Especially when I was going by the big spray painted "Whities Keep Out!" right after I got off the exit... -Ben |

Most of Detroit's industry is actually outside of Detroit proper, and even that is going to hell in a handbasket.

I used to have to work security on both sides of the river in the St. Louis metro area, 6 counties in 2 states. I also used to work security in the Detroit area. ESL HANDS EFFIN' DOWN.
Whenever I would get an alarm in ESL or anywhere on the IL side, I would have to drive to the office in downtown STL, LOCK UP MY PISTOL, and then respond. I would occasionally get stopped by the Illinois State Police after crossing the bridge, just to ensure that I was suitably unarmed. LITERALLY. I must say, though, that Venice, IL, in the ESL area, is the only place where I have had weapons drawn on me by the local urban pharmacists who were selling crack directly outside the police station. The cop on duty? Asleep on the side of Highway 3. I decided to go do something safe, like perimeter security at a US Army base in Kosovo, or work in Phnom Penh or Bangkok!!! |
Gotta throw some Detroit in the mix, to keep this fair and balanced.
why don't they level that old shit already..ESL
I spent the night in a crappy ass motel in WSL once about 18 years ago. Even that side of town was shit. |

The 2 pics of ESL posted so far are visible from i-70.
If that's what they show passers by, imagine what it looks like off the beaten path. ESL is bad. |
Tough call but I have to give a slight edge to ESL. BTW, the worst race riot on US soil happened there many many years ago.
ESL
I have been lost in Detroit and I have been lost in East St Louis. ...missed an exit ramp both times. East St Louis for The Winner ! |
I've been to both and can't decide.
I vote nuke them both and see which one burns the longest. |

Detroit's riot of '67 would have been worse if the NG hadn't have brought the -48s and 113s. Ma Duece's are pretty good at quelling riots.
Tough call but I have to give a slight edge to ESL. BTW, the worst race riot on US soil happened there many many years ago. Detroit, not so long ago,was one of the top 5 US big cities, and that's just Detroit. |

Detriot due to much larger size.
But by square mile ESL would have it. Quite a few of you say Memphis. Makes me wonder how much travel you've done. Ever been to ESL or Detriot. Much worse than Memphis. Yes I've seen all three. |

That's what happened after the '67 riots, known as "White Flight". The whole city administration became a bunch of crooks'n thugs. Shitty mayors and city councils.

It's not really fair to compare ESL with Detroit,as Detroit is so much bigger. A more apt comparison would be Flint or Gary vs ESL,and yet that might not even be a good comparison. ESL really didn't have a big industry like Flint or Gary that went downhill fast. |
