Why are some rounds referred to by caliber and others by mm???  For example, .45cal and 9mm...

I know that caliber refers to diameter, but what exactly is the mm designation refering to?  Is it length?  Length of what?  Bullet, cartridge, both???  I just can't figure it out...grrrrr... and I don't consider myself an amatuer either!

Thanks

Both are diameter meas.

.45 cal is inch meas.
9mm is metric meas.
like a yard to a meter and so on.

I guess it's Europe vs. America, which is to say Metric system vs. Imperial sys.

Both of your examples refer to diameter in different measuring systems.  Nomenclature for cartridge designations is based on everything from physical measurements to ego.

It's even more wackeir than you think.

The 7.62X39 has a bullet that's larger in diameter than the 7.62X51.

Also a .303 Brit is larger than a .308.
