My impression is that one of the things that the big touristy places like Nassau (as opposed to the less develop small islands) specializes in is shark feeding dives. So if that floats your boat, the Bahamas is definitely the place for it.
I just got back yesterday after dragging ALL my gear (BCD, regulators, computer, fins, snorkel, mask, knife, sausage, safety kit, spare kit, booties, gloves, hood, 2-piece 7mm suit, skin, ...) first to Florida, then to Spain. So I'm obviously one of those guys who likes my own stuff and is willing to drag it everywhere.
However, reputable dive shops increasingly tend to have really good rental gear, so I think it is getting pretty safe and easy to just rent if you don't want to carry everything around (and have to clean and dry everything) - just don't expect sophisticated dive computers and BCD's with integrated weights!
