My oldest son made me a grandfather at 42 yesterday.

Aubrey Madelina

I couldn't be more thrilled.  But what are some alternative terms for "grandpa."  I just don't know if it suits me.  What do/did you call your GP?  What do your kids call your dad?

When we were young we called my grandfathers "Puppa"

When we got a little older we called them "Grandpa"

Congrats by the way!

Paternal grandfather = Granpa

Maternal grandfather = PawPaw.

Now, PawPaw has a whole bunch of great-grandkids now who all still call him PawPaw, so one uncle's grandkids call him 'Daddy Bill.'

Paternal is Granddad, he is an Optometrist and very formal. Doc by his peers.

Maternal told us to call him Guy. It was weird, but its what he wanted. I guess that was his nickname. I think I'd prefer Gramps when the times comes.

Congrats on new rugrat in the family.

Doesn't matter what you want to be called. THe kids will figure it out for themselves, and you just go with it!

I didn't know my maternal grandfather, or paternal grandfather.

My paternal grandmother remarried before I was born, and I called him Grandaddy.
And he treated my just like one of his own natural grandchildren.

It must be a regional thing, because nobody I grew up with kept their 'kid' name for their grandparents into adulthood.  It became Grandpa X, or Grandma Y.  Most were instructed to change the name they used.  It was another subtle signal of no longer being a kid...

The first time I ever saw adults calling their grandparents "Pawpaw" or "Memaw" was on arfcom.
