Yes its true.  Me and the Mrs took the two little ones ( 8 and 11) out to see the dreaded movie from hell.  Yes I can see it now soon we will be worshiping Satan!!

No seriously, I found the movie to be entertaining.  Its your basic good versus evil movie.
No praying to demons or imps etc.  Yes there are some goblins ( actually I found it funny that they are the bankers!!) and a troll.
The movie also speaks highly of what are universally considered virtues.  Be true to your friends unless they are doing wrong, bravery and self sacrifice for the good of all.

Frankly I do not see what all the anti-hype is all about!!

When your 11 year old cast spells and your 8 year old belives in spirits, well they're just 8 & 11, kids play right!, what harm can happen.

Say "damn" in front of your kids and what do they do, repeat it.  Expose your kids to lifes darker side (through a well meaning, fun and wholesome, kids's movie) and what do they do?

We shovel enough crap into our kids with media and peer pressure alone that our collective 12 year old daughters are dressing like sluts and learning how to swear, smoke and whore around before they reach puberty.  We aren't doing our collective sons any favors either.

As my good Thai friend Peter says "everybody's different, that's what makes the world go around".  Well he's right, we are all different with a different set of moral and parental values for our kids.

However...

If we want to let society dictate what we allow them to see "cause' everybody's seein' it"

or what they wear "cause' everybody's wearin' it"

or how far the 14 year old is going to let a guy go on the first date "cause' everybody's doin' it"

When their lives fall apart, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Our job as parents is to guard the hearts of our children.  Their purity is much too easily lost.

Osama & his followers not only banned Harry Potter, they banned all movies as evil. Plus television.
That was the one right thing Osama did, by banning TV, he banned Benny Hinn and his like.

Harry Potter is a good moral movie and the world is a better place because of it.

Uhhh, I'm not sure you can equate fantasy about playing with dollies or with toy trucks with fantasy about black magic or casting spells.

I believe any parent that takes their child to see this movie has some SERIOUS work to do in giving their children the context about what is a right and moral fantasy to have in re: Harry Potter.

That's all. Now, get busy, parents [:D]

Pretty close. I'm so proud of you, my child {sniff, sniff}

Allow me to add -

Scripture gives accounts of murder, rape, incest, witchcraft, lying, theft, adultery, fornication, drunkenness, treachery, betrayal, patricide, human sacrifice and a hundred other sinful acts.

But they are ALL told in a moral context that upholds and commends doing right, rather than glamorizing and tolerating doing evil.

Therein lies the difference. And its an important one.

Now, not having seen Potter, I can't make a judgment either way. However, Given Hollywoods penchant for glamorizing wrongdoing, one HAS to wonder....

What is it about Harry Potter that is so ojectionable?
If you're going to rant about Harry Potter, what about half the Disney movies ever made?
"Return to Witch Mountain"
"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"
"Pinochio"
"Fantasia"
"Mary Poppins" etc, etc, etc.....
Any movie that has talking animals....because then we're giving children the idea that animals have souls.
The list is endless.
How about...."A Christmas Carol"? After all the Bible says nothing about Christmas ghosts, past, present or future. What about "It's a Wonderfull Life"? According to the Bible, people don't become angels. Better keep your chidren away from that one.
Scuse me, I have to go out and buy some tin foil.

Actually, you brought a Scripture verse to mind....

Matthew 18: 5-6

And whoever will receive a little child in my name receiveth me.

But whoever shall offend one of these little children which beleive in me, it were better for him that a massive stone were tied to his neck, and that he were drowned in the deep sea.

But, I'm sure you are not doing all that, right??? You're just saving them from misinfomation about God, not telling them God is a phony, right???

NOPE. I can't see anywhere the Bible says you'll burn in hell for that.

There is ONLY one reason anyone would burn in hell. Actually, burning in hell is quite easy to avoid. its so simple to do, its amazing more people don't do it.

Actually, that was probably mostly just artistic in nature, rather than substantive.

My worst case conspiracy theory?? Probably just a red herring to get self-religious types in an uproar.

You gotta understand - ALL publicity is seen as a good thing in Hollywood, whether it be bad or good. It get the word out, peaks interest and getsa butts in teh theatre seats.

In reality, the self-religious types helped to make this as booming a movie premier as it turned out to be.

Being much more wiccan than any other religion, I found Harry Potter to be delightful.  There was a good side and a bad side.  The bad side lost out (for the time being).

While you may beleive that all magic (and followers of same) is evil, quite the opposite is true.  I havenever found a follower of Wicca to be anythign but good and pure of heart.  Must be all the orgies that cleanes their system of the toxins foisted on them by organized religions.

No I tell them that god is a creation of people with weak minds who do not have the internal fortitude to do right instead of wrong and must rely on an external control to decide these issues.

We talk about things such as drugs and alchohol etc in terms of what is right and wrong of their own accord NOT due to any god being telling us right from wrong.

God does not exist in our house, never has never will as far as I am concerned.

And a GOOD question it is...

As you can tell, I'm not THAT much in an uproar over Potter. Its a fad, it will pass. Remember Bryan Adams?? great music. But pop culture has a way of devouring its own offspring. Potter is likely  fodder for the same insatiable appetite.

And in reality, XXX porn and similar other examples of what God considers sin found in everything from G to R movies has had FAR greater an affect on de-moralizing (literally) society than Potter probably will.

I think its partly a fear factor that gets people in an uproar over Potter. Hollywood is KNOWN for its anti-God stance, so we religious types expect them to take the anti-God stance in about anything they do. It may not be a legitimate fear here. But I'm inclined to keep an eye on it, and see where it goes. Hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

But the difference with drugs is eventually, you WILL mind what it costs you, and it turns out to be a TERRIBLE investment. I have never yet met ANYONE who TRULY met God, and then regretted his decision. Honest. I haven't. I have met LOTS of people who "found religion" and then regretted it.
