HONOLULU - The Air Force said Sunday that a B-52 bomber carrying six crew members crashed off the island of Guam. The Coast Guard said two people have been recovered from the waters. Their condition was not immediately available. Rescue crews from the Navy, Coast Guard and local fire department were searching for the others. Story continues below ↓ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- advertisement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Officials said the crash occurred about 25 miles northwest of Apra Harbor. The accident is the second for the Air Force this year on Guam. In February, a B-2 crashed at Andersen Air Force Base in the first-ever crash of a stealth bomber. The military estimated the loss of the aircraft at $1.4 billion. |

shitty man.... we're having a rough year this year. this is getting close to the 20th aircraft destroyed this year.
I'm guessing it's possibly ops tempo related. That or someone is fucking up. |
It's been a bad year for all of us. Matt |
USN not doing well either. Wartime op tempo. |
forgive my stupid question, but does a B-52 have some ejection or escape?
Damn.. I hope more than two of them survived, and the two we know of are injury-free.
a MH-60 crashed last September, the B-2 in January, and a EA-6B Prowler in February, and a Korean Air flight last year |
yes, but they're old seats, and they are not like a fighter where they have a 0/0 capability. certain speed and altitude requirements must be met for guys to get out safely, especially the guys on the lower deck, because their seats shoot DOWN |
Yes, but not necessarily for all the crewmembers and it's no guaranteed safe ticket out. |
is that just Guam, because AF wide we've lost (this is off of the top of my head, so may not be entirely accurate) 2 F-15*s, 2 F-16's**, 2 T-6's, 2 T-38's ****, a T-1, a B-2, a C-130, and now a B-52. the *'s represent crew members killed. Again, this is just off the top of my head, and there may be more that I am forgetting and my list may not be entirely accurate either |

I know the difference between my Air Force's inventory. Errors happen when people fuck up. People fuck up when they're tired or in a hurry. Hence, my ops tempo comment. OR People are fucking up. Bad or lack of training, not giving a fuck, not following TO's etc EDIT: Either way, it's still tragic and I mourn their loss. |

just Guam |

Here's a cool website I found www.ejectionsite.com/b-52.htm |
damn... |
don't know yet. here's hoping they got out. no reports of fatalities yet. this shit hits close to hope. i've got several friends at Barksdale who fly buffs, so right now i'm just hoping they're ok, and even if the crew isn't anyone i know, i hope they got out ok |
Well, that and the fact that the '52, like most of the AF's 'big' birds other than the C-17 and the B-1/B-2, is essentially a flying fossil... It's rather remarkable that the AF can keep some of the positively ANCIENT birds they fly up.... |

Most of the BUFF's are my age more or less. It's actually amazing that we have not lost more considering how many hours they have and how much we rely on them.
Sad day to lose a classic like that. |
No. At 3 crashes, get suspicious. |
of what? |
All things considered, the B52 has pretty good survivability, esp. if the crew has some warning.
There's still hope for the crew. David |
is that an F-111? how stupid are the news readers these days... |
I wonder where they stuffed the other four crewmembers. |
F-14 |
f-14, and I don't think the talking head selected the pic |
oops...shit i should have known that and that's NAVY. |
The article says the B2 crash was the first stealth bomber crash ever, didnt we lose a few F117s a few years back and didnt an F22 crash leaving Vegas last year or the year before?
F-117's and F-22's aren't bombers |
She can't see the asset composited in behind her, unless she's looking at a post loop. Which she isn't. |
IIRC the F117 is called a fighter simply to confuse our enemies...and you are right the F22 isnt a bomber. |
F117 and F22 Are Called Fighters Even though all the F117 ever did was bomb stuff. |
The irony is so thick, I almost can't type! haha! Matt |
4 crew members go up and 2 go down, the pilot has to tell the crew to eject as the seats operate independently of each other, unlike most fighter A/C where either fwd or aft seat can initate the ejection sequence which will eject both seats. |
We lost a Predator over here a few months ago. The pilot was so upset, he almost spilled his coffee!
as a pilot, i smiled on the inside, and did a little dance in celebration |
Obviously, they need someone of your caliber with your skillz to pilot such a contraption... your victory dance may be short-lived. Matt |
