I wonder if they still call CH-53s "shitters"?
Man those photos brought back some memories. I spent a lot of time inside CH-46's on LHA's and LPH's. (edited for spelling) |

Damn! That sh** gives me a woodie! I can't even imagine living a life like that. Flunked physical back in '74 because of Asthma and it's haunted me ever since.

I don't remember the variant letter. It's been too many years. It could've just been that variants nickname. Although I do remember, on a couple miraculous occasions, they were all actually ready and able to fly [:D]. |

Possibly I can shed some light on the shitter question.
I was a '53A&D model Crew Chief in from 83 to 86 in Kaneohe Bay HI. We refered to our '53s as shitters. This was especially common when in a composite squadron when deployed. CH-53s were shitters (because they leaked like a sieve), CH-46s were frogs (they looked like frogs), UH-1Ns were Hueys and AH1s were snakes (Cobras - snakes). When the CH-53E came in service (the model in the photos) they were dubbed the Super Stallion (the 53A&Ds are Sea Stallions). I have heard of them refered to as super shitters, but I don't know if was common or not. I left the CH-53 community in 86 to go to KC-130 Flight Engineer training. Man, I do miss it though... |

the term "Shitter" is still used, but only by the Marines that have been around 10 or so plus years. The reason they are called shitters, as related to me by a 53 pilot, is that if you look at their side they look like the multi seat shatters used by the military in the field. |

Spent some time with a Super Stallion crew and their ship at a show a couple of years ago. What a bird! Truly the best helicopter ever devised: power, speed, agility, payload, range...

never tell anyone(when going for a physical) that you have asthma. I have a friend of mine that ran track in high school, he had a history of asthma buct did not have an attack since on the track team. Well for the past 25 years he's be saying the same thing. In fact unless you have a an apart physical malady don't say shit.
