I over heard a couple guys talking about a TV documentory about how three ancient civilizations' calanders all ended in 2012. One of them was the Mayans, and their calander ended in 06/2012. They were saying the three groups were separated by thousands of miles - so presumably they had no contact with each other. Supposedly this means the end of the world or some kind of new beginning. Has anyone heard something about this? Any more info available?

This has only been discussed here and a number of other places a few thousand times.
Welcome to the 20th century. |
the mayans had to stop it somewhere.
it would be more freaky if they had carved their calendar in stone out to infinity |
Its the winter solstice on 12/21/12 when the Mayan Long Count reaches the end of the 4th cycle. Earth and sun align with the 13 Zodiac symbol which also is a direct line to the center of the Milky Way.

OMG WTF!? THANKS FOR LETTING ME KNOW!
People have been predicting the end of the earth since the dawn of man. And so far, all 297609187319863987329881239 of those predictions have been wrong. I have a good feeling that 2012 won't be much different. |

remember y2k lol
i was in the basement standing next to the breaker box...tripped the house power when the ball dropped |

It's the end of the world only if you're not living like it is. If you are, the world will continue as punishment.
You know, statistically speaking, eventually SOMEONE will be right!! To bad not a soul will be around to congratulate them on their success. |
There's also the Chinese I Ching (pronounced ee ching) that suddenly stops in 2012 as well.
Hm...the Chinese and the Mayans... |
The last day of the Mayan calendar is December 21st 2012 not June. ETA: In on P.1 of yet another ARFCOM Doom & Gloom Thread and in before the crazies join in. |
I don't believe any of it, but I believe there was also a German one that supposedly got the same date too. |
I'm about to start smoking cigs again since I only have a few years to live. And I'm firkin serious!!!
Dibs on anyone's guns and ammo that wants to support a poor college student through the end of the world!
I'm thinking some nut case group will try to make something occur on that date, similar to that Japanese doomsday cult that nerve-gassed the Tokyo subway, or something like the movie 12 Monkeys.
If the Mayans really had prophetic powers their calendar would have stopped about 500 years ago.
I've got a couple calenders laying around the house that stop at 12-31-08.
December 21st, 2012 is the end of the 5126 year calendar, the date the Mayans believed a religious miracle would occur and an age of enlightenment would follow.
Lol. |
I truly wish I had thought to do that. Missed my grand opportunity |
dang, I'll only be 50 years old
can I get my Social Security payments a little early? |
An easy solution is to mortgage your home and party all year! |
Ever heard of it? Phew...man where have you been? In four years, we're all going to die for sure.
Yeah I'm pretty much sure that the ancients were right about the whole end of the calendar thing.
Well I for one know it's true - I bought some batteries today and it says right on the package that they expire 12/2012. If that ain't proof I don't know what is....
That is only if we can find all 13 crystal skulls. If we are unable to locate all of them by 12/21/2012 then the end will come... Just to let anyone know the Mayan's calender is far more advanced than that of our own, they were obsessed with time. I don't believe that everything will be rosy between no and then there will be many horrid events leading up to the actual date, such as the collapse of civilization due to debt and not enough oil. However we have found I believe 5 of these said skulls. |
Look at the bright side. You can stop paying taxes and spend all your money on guns, hookers & blows. By the time the IRS catches up with you, it's all over anyway.
Its interesting that most ancient cultures and civilizations looked up for guidance, religion and calendars. It would explain why so many civilizations had the "same" calendar, they were all looking at the same thing to make it. The sky.

O.M.G. The world is ending before I can retire. Sucks to be me. |
Technically it is about to end in a few months time. Due to Oil, greed, terrorism, the fact that the U.S. will soon be the poorest country in the world....
Really, and what did the Mayans know that we don't? It was rumored in the ancient times that the earth was destroyed by fire every 50 years...problem is, that only happened once about 4000 years ago. The view of the ancients is myopic. Ever read any Velikovsky? |

hahahahahahah!!! Well done! vmax84 |
Well for one example they were obsessed with astronamy. They located and basically mapped the black hole that NASA has recently found. So...it make you wonder doesn't it. Besides, thier prediction isn't really that important with the upcoming depression and oil crises we now face! |

Yes. The world will end in 2012. Go borrow a ton of money (interest only, with balloon payments in 2013), and spend whatever savings you have. You won't have to pay back the loans, and you won't need the savings for your retirement.
You're welcome. |

Thanks a lot Mayans! First your society fails, and now you caused the end of the world because no one was around to fix the Y2012 compliance issue built into your calendar!
Happy?! |
