"Nov. 25 —   The first of a contingent of 1,500 U.S. Marines, shipped in on waves of helicopters, have landed on the ground near the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, the last stronghold of the Taliban, sources told NBC News. The arrival of U.S. troops on the ground follows the capture of Kunduz, the Taliban’s last northern stronghold, after a two-week siege by Northern Alliance troops. Hundreds of captured foreign fighters were said to have died in a prison riot quashed by the alliance and U.S. airstrikes."
