Quoted: The simplest and most libertarian solution would be to turn marriage into a secular civil union for all people. Then everyone, straight and gay alike could go into a magistrates office and get legally united under the law. This would have all the same legal standings as marriages have now. Then remove the legal rights of priests to marry couples, turning the religious marriage to a simple religious ceremony for those who like such things, with no legal standings.
This way gays could get their legal rights without needing to anger the religious people.
Simple and effective, no one needs get offended |
Fail.
My wife's uncle(ordained minister) pronounced us husband and wife before God and those present. That carries far more weight for me and, logically, any other Christian than any state administrated "marriage" ever could.
I would be very, very disagreeable should some asshat believe he had the authority to tell me that it was meaningless.
Oh, and the secondary reason?
The government needs less power, not more.
