On my 1911 gun I have a set of Cocobolo wood grips that lost the polish from the factory. What can I use to repolish the grips to a nice shine that will withstand the gun oils and cleaners.

Shoe polish?

As long as you are trying shoe polish, why don't you try chocolate sauce?

Birchwood Casey's Tru-oil. Depends on if you want a smooth or dull surface. If egg shell/dull finish, use 0000 steel wooland LIGHTLY BUFF, then use some Johnson's Tree Wax.

I will second the Tung Oil. I used MinWax Tung Oil on my M1A, refinish job on a few other guns my father had abused and let go.

I didn't do the OOOO steel wool....I wiped it on let it sit about 5 Mintutes and wiped it off with a good Lint free rug. Repeat about 10 times.

If you want them Glossy....don't wipe the last coat off, just let it dry.

Good Luck

You might want to try burnishing them lightly with 4X (very fine) steel wool to see if that restores the shine.  Coarse burlap might work too.

In my limited experience, finishes don’t adhere very well to cocobolo since it’s so oily.  I’ve used Tru-Oil with fair success.  Removing some of the oils with a mild petroleum solvent first might help with the adhesion problem.

Furniture wax should give a nice appearance but will probably wear off pretty fast.
