Got this in an email...
This bear was killed by an airman here on base down on Hitchenbrook Island were I went deer hunting last year. This is what I would like to get. Look at this one -- 12’6” and estimated over 1600lbs. He was walking to his hunting area and the big boy stood up only 35 yards away. He was shocked, the bear dropped down and went straight for him. He unloaded his gun and it fell 10 yards from him. DAMN!!!
Ive been bear hunting before and THATS a GOOD ONE, worth gettin a mount made |
I'm glad this isn't another thread on which handgun caliber to carry for protection against bears- 9mm, 40 or 45?
He unloaded his gun?
Why did he do that? Was he trying to convince the bear he meant no harm? "Look, Mr. Bear, it ain't loaded, see?" Nah, I'm kidding. I know what you meant. I would llike to know what he was using for a firearm. I am surprised his is in focus in the photo, I would still be shaking so fast, all you would see is blur where I was supposed to be. |
I think he is thinking only three things:
1. The guys at work arent gonna believe THIS. 2. Damn taxidermist is gonna charge me an arm and a leg for this sucker. 3. I hope I get a chance to fill my deer tag soon... Kharn |

Man, I can only quote John Belushi as stated in the movie Animal House:
Holy Shit!! HOOLLY SHIT HHHOOOOOLLLLLYYYY SSSHHHHHIIIITTTTTTT!!!!! |
Hey, one more question. Where the F is Hitchenbrook Island??????
I can't think of anything more exciting than being charged by an animal that wants to kill you and eat you.
My hats off to you. [beer] |

That bear is huge! Some people bowhunt for bear.
To hell with that. Gimme a .50 BMG! |
What airbase? What firearm?
The only Hitchenbrook Island I found was in Queensland, Australia. Last time I checked, they didn't have any brown bears there...nor any guns for that matter. Just curious mind you. HUGE bear though! What a trophy. [:\] |

Is this the place? Prince William Sound
In Prince William Sound the Demarcation Line is between Cape Hitchenbrook and Montague Island. Orion Charters is "Licensed" to operate up to 100 miles offshore from Hitchenbrook/Montague Islands. |

Quint said it best:
Back home I got a taxeedermist, he gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him!" Is it me or does that guy look half asleep? Post adrenaline dump exhaustion? |

Prince William Sound: Montague and Hinchinbrook Islands
The population of GMU 6D which includes PWS and the surrounding mainland may be declining (ADFG 1993). The larger islands in Prince William Sound (PWS) support brown bear populations. Montague and Hinchinbrook Islands have the largest island populations, estimated at 55 to 139 for Hinchinbrook and 23 to 58 for Montague. Hawkins island near Cordova has about 10 to 19 . There are also about 11 to 22 brown bears on the Kenai Peninsula mainland adjoining western Prince William Sound (Nowlin 1993). The smaller islands of western Prince William Sound are not large enough to support resident brown bear populations, but bears can and do swim between these islands (Miller and Ballard 1982). Kayak Island, less than 3 km off Cape Suckling in the Gulf of Alaska, is estimated to have 3 to 10 brown bears (ADFG 1993). |

Do they make rifles big enough to put down a bear that big or did this guy get REAL lucky? |
OMG! That's a huge friggin bear! Amazing that the Airman came out unscathed, how the heck could he get that carcass out of there?
HOLY KEE-RIST
Man, this guy has big brass ones. And I mean big. Remember the 9mm/45 pistol/bear discussion? Screw that, I'm thinking minigun or 20mm Vulcan. I knew bears got big, but this has got to be one of those steroid sucking freaks of nature like you see on Soloflex commercials. I hate to see it get capped, but I'd hate to see this guy end up bear chow. MOLON LABE |

Damned!!!! I wonder how many Airmen have been missing from that base over the last several years.

Absolutely astonishing. Bravo Sir, my hat is off to you.
"Did you see that paw?" Everytime I see that bear's head, It Looks Bigger. |
Before the bear dropped "He must have felt like a kitten In a snake cage" Thank God No one de clawed him!
That little thing? That's a sissy bear, I would have punched him out.
(Just joshing! DAAAAAAAAMNN!) |
Haven't seen it mentioned: what calibre and how many shots to drop this freakin' monster? WOW, that is a BIG BEAR!

So this would qualify as a SHTF moment???
How many of us would've lived through that? |

How did he get it out of there, with a forklift?
(note to self: stay away from Hitchenbrook Island.) |
WOW!! [shock] What a trophy! What did He use on that monster a rail gun?!
cute dog btw! |
I wonder how long it took him to clean the shit out of his pants...
lol |
That's unreal. I can't even imagine what it'd be like with that behemoth looking at me like a twinkie, much less charging at me. THAT'S when you want that .577 Tyrannosaur!
Watch, it'll turn out that he killed the thing with a 10/22 and a .38! |
So that likely is some variety of Grizzly? Has that head shape to it and by the size I'm guessing that is what it is.
Certainly makes me a little happier knowing that the only thing I'm likely to see in the hills of California is a measily little black bear that might stand a bit over 6 feet. I just bought a 44Mag and the one thing I'm sitting here thinking is that in the case of that monster in the pictures I don't think I'd feel very confident in the sidearm I had chosen, that big sucker makes me think 480Ruger, 45-70, or 12gauge shooting the most nasty lethal slugs you can get your hands on minimum. My 44Mag might be black bear medicine but boy I don't think I'd feel too at ease against a monster like that. |
There is a fellow on the Stickbow site that is hinting at the picture being a fake. I posted a "you gotta go see this", over there.
I get the feeling that emptying a 30-round mag from the AR15 would not stop that beast.
