What was all of that crap about the hotels and casinos falling on hard times, laying off large percentages of staff and cutting room rates????

I went to book a reservation online at my usual hotel for probably the final CES I will be able to afford to attend and the damn hotel raised it's rates $50 per night! This is even after I called up the desk 3 weeks ago (couldn't book a res then because their computer reservation system wasn't updated or something) and the guy assured me that they weren't going to raise their rates.

Should I call up the desk and tell them that I have been staying there the past 5 years and I deserve a damn price break?

It must be a busy weekend?
A friend is a dealer and her hours have been cut. A three day week until further notice.

Its all relative. Things have slowed down out here since 9/11. But that doesn't mean the place is a ghost town. Just not quite as crazy as before. The big conventions are scheduled way ahead of time and so probably the effects have yet to be seen on them. There are lots of room deals to be had but maybe not very near th e convention center during one of the big ones.

Imbrog,

I was in Las Vegas two weeks ago, stayed a the Circus Circus, cheapo....but as I was waiting for the tram I started talking to an older lady who told me that particular Hotel did lay off a boatload of personnel.  Then there was a guy who worked there (in his 70's) part time, he wasn't on the clock, but he was hangin out there hoping there would be some more hours for him on the new schedule....

My mom is a dealer at Bellagio and she survived the layaoffs. Apparently most of the people laid off have come back to work where she is, but it's slower than usual.
As a side note, when in Vegas don't forget to tip the dealers, change attendants, valets, and anybody else that the company owns. And be polite no matter how much you lose. That nice lady behind the 21 table might be my mother. She particpates in the Corporate Challenge (a city wide shooting event, usually won by the LV metro PD) using her Glock 26 and she generally outshoots all the tricked out 1911 guys.

Yeah it is busy. Especially when Comdex (computer show) is happening. Bill Gates is giving some 3hr lecture there. I signed up to go, but couldn't make it. I have a few friends there though.

The Stratosphere and the Riveria keep sending me postcards begging me to come.  The Stratosphere was advertiing rooms for as low as $19.00 a night.  Of course that isn't weekends.

Heck I'm going this weekend and again in December (to the Front Sight SMG Class [:)])
Airline tickets were cheap ($100 for thanksgiving weekend and $66 for the dec. trip).  Harrah's had $19 rooms in december to boot.  So it's sounding like a fair deal right now to go to vegas.
If you haven't been, it's fun....once or twice.  After about three hours and 16 different exteriors, most of the casino's are the same, though.  Off-strip ones tend to be a little better for newer gamblers to enjoy, but that's just my experience.

Room rates will always be higher on convention weekends.

I prefer to stay at Hard Rock when I'm there by myself. Monte Carlo when I take the wife along.

I've stayed at Bellagio. Now I want to stay at the Venetian. My favorite casino was NY NY. It had the most stuff to do that I liked.

The local news said that Vegas was seeing an increase in recent weeks due to the 9-11 attacks. A lot of people want a vacation, but would rather drive somewhere than fly. And Las Vegas is only about a 3-5 hours drive for a lot of people. Fun without risky foriegn travel.

I only passed through the last time I was there in June, but were a lot of really cool new hotels and resorts that I really wanted to check out.

The Monte Carlo is my favorite casino, and the Mrs and I have reservations the first week of December for 59 bucks a night.

I think things have slowed down a bit. I usually go to Vegas about 4 times a year, and prices are normally higher than what they've been since 9-11. BTW, the best way to get good deals on reservations to casinos is to go on the casinos web sites and sign their guest books. Also, get on their mailing lists when you stay at a particular casino.

Why the past tense on NYNY?  Did they close??

Venetian's rooms are astounding.  The bathrooms look like something out of a porno photoshoot. [:D]

Probably because of all the hot young bimbos at the Hard Dick on Friday/Saturday nights. [:D]  Their website has (or at least had, last time I checked) a "live pool-cam" that was often worth a look.

Last time I went to Vegas (looking for a house, but unfortunately didn't get to go), I won $1100 at Suncoast (where I stayed). I would have bought a new gun, but like a dumb ass, I wasn't even thinking about it. I ended up spending a lot of it on stupid things. Grrrrrrrr.......
