A play on the sounds of the letters for "I seek you."  Basically, it's an instant messaging type software not unlike AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger.  It appears in a separate window and uses a different "channel" on the web to communicate to other ICQ users.

You can have lists of friends who also have ICQ. When you go on the internet, you can see if they're on the internet too, then you can chat with them in real time if you wanted to.

Lately, ICQ as well as the other "messenger" programs have gone way past just a simple "chat" feature with birthday reminders, ways to transfer files, etc.

Use FAKE information for that or you will be sorry.  Give them an email you don't use too, they will SPAM you to death.
