What is the difference (if any) between the 228 and the 229.  They are both 9mm and look to be compacts.   thanks

I think the P229 has a one piece slide and is made in the USA.

The frame is German.

Except the "Sport" models are made totally in Germany.

I have a P226 9mm German and a P229 .357Sig mutt.

I'm not sure if the P228 is still made?

Are they?

I still want one.

The 228 was Sig's compact version of 226 and was out before the 229.  The 229 came out a little later and was originally chambered in .40 & .357.  Sig decided to combine the production of the 228/229 and dropped the 228 chambering the 229 in 9x19 as well .40 & .357.  Differences of the 228 is that it has a slightly slimmer grip and the 228 slide was stamped rather than machined (229).

i have been to several gun shops looking at small handguns.  I just received a CCDW license and want a smaller hand gun.  I like the feel of a sig.  Only compact sigs that i have seen lately have been 228's.  Havent seen any 299's at all.  One piece slide?  Good?  Bad?  Please explain.   thanks

Wrong.  The P229 was Sig's first .40 S&W.  Afterward, it was offered in 9mm.  The main difference is that the slide on a 229 is Stainless Steel.  It is also milled to a slightly different shape.  My 229's slide is somewhat heavier than my 228's.

I'm not a Sig guy so I don't know the complete history but as far as the 228 goes it's a great gun you have nothing to fear.  Many folks still prefer the 228 to the 229.  If it were me I'd grab the 228 'cause it should come w/ hi-caps and will certainly be cheaper than the 229.

All I know is that I prefer all German manufacture Sig's.

Forget that half an half crap.

The laser etching on German manufacture Sig's are much nicer.

I'm pretty sure it won't.

The floorplate might be different.

P229 has a plastic floorplate and the P228 has a metal plate like the P226 & P220.

What year did you get it?

Two-tone?

K-Kote?

Sport model?

LEO model?

Sorry about all the questions.

I am fairly certain that both of my guns are made in Germany also.  I'm in the city, so I can't grab the P229 (can't have evil handguns here in the crime free city of Chicago!!) to check--it is stored in the suburbs.  My P229 is here in IL.  I believe I got it in 1995 and it has night sights.  The P228 I got about 2 years ago (K-kote, night sights).

I believe the 228 and 229 9mm mags are interchangeable, and you can use the 226 mags in the gun also (with the mag extending below the floorplate).

Did I get a raw deal?

Purchased around 1999 or 2000.

.357Sig two-tone

Frame made in Germany w/proofmarks
Slide made in USA and doesn't look as good as my P226 slide.

No handguns in all of Chicago?

Quite possibly the safest city to live in the US!

Maybe I'll sell my P229 and get a P229 Sport German manufacture.

I have a '93 228.  All German.  The difference is the slide, as noted above, and the slide rails on the frame.  They were beefed up to support the .40/.357.

opinion: the most accurate, well balanced, reliable, all-around duty, ccw, defense gun there is.  period

Glocks suck. [;)] HA!     (<---- shameless bait!)

228's are not disco'd, they are on back order on contracts.  The 228 was only made for 3 or 4 years  before the hi-cap ban so 13rndrs are hard t find and expensive if factory made.  Only other brand I will shoot i it is MecGar.  They OEM'd the original 228.

If you are considering a .40 at all get the 229.  If you are set on the 9mm, definitely the 228. and you save about a 100 bucks.  NIB 228's on gunbroker.com go for about 525-550, 229's fro about 650.  You can probably find a 99% 228 at a dealer for 500 flat or better.

The 228 is a bit, not much, lighter.  I prefer the slide serations of the 228 to that of the 229.

The only draw back, as on any sig is the finish.  Take the 100 you saved from the 229 and get a Robar NP3 finish.

That, sir, is one hell of a gun!

2 bits

The SIG 228 can accept any hi-cap (or ten round)mag the SIG 226 can take!

And it's smaller!

DaMan

PS - My 228 was made entirely in W. Germany!

Same for my SIG226!

The 229 can as well but of course the 226 & 228 hi-caps are 9mm (but some guys have accidently found that those 9mm mags hold & feed .40 also [:)]).

The P228 is still in production.  SIG only sells them to law enforcement currently.  The 228 is slightly lighter than the 229 is available in 9mm only.  You can find used ones and they are sweet pistols.  Even though they are LEO only now, you can find a used one, even one that was produced for LE (which are legal to own).
Link Posted: 9/29/2001 6:00:14 PM EDT
[#19]
The mags for the 228 and 229 are interchangable in the 9mm format.  The big difference between the two pistols is that the slides are different.  SIG dropped the 225/228 (carbon steel) slide production in favor of the 229 (stainless steel) slide.  It simplified SIG's product line.  You do not want two same products competeting for the same market share.

I looked at a brand new 288.  They were gonna sell it to me (i am not an officer).  Why would a hand gun be LEO only?

There was a contract clause from the (Clinton commie) government for the SIG 228.  We will buy it along it is not sold to the public.

The only reason one of these would be LEO is HiCap mags.  The 228 the FFL/Dealer has he may have had for a while, there may be some in the pipeline.

Orion. Either is a GREAT pistol  period. I will boil this down quick.

9mm get the 228
40/.357 get the 229.
or
you gotta have a polished stainless slide.  get the 229.

I went 228.  NO regrets!

email me if you'd like

The P228 is LEO only for marketing reasons.

I’m sure Sig would like to drop it entirely here in the states.  However, many LE agencies have adopted it and those agencies’ LEO’s still need to be able to buy P228’s.

If you’re going with the 9mm and you can live without the stainless steel slide, definitely go for the P228.

Expect most used P228’s to look ratty.

Sig is no longer selling the 228 in the civilian sales market so if you want a 228 you'll have to find a used one (which should be easy) or find a older new one from someone's inventory.

Orion526:  Beware of cracked Sig OEM hi-cap mags.

Check the weld at the top of the magazine’s spine (about where the primer of the top round would be).  This weld sometimes cracks due to the rounds pushing the mag lips apart.  Put the tip of your little finger between the two lips and gently try to separate them while watching the weld.  If it’s cracked, you’ll see the joint open up.

This applies only to Sig mags with the witness holes in the back of the mag.

Yes, you can find factory 228 hi-caps (13rd.) and also keep your eyes open for flush fit pre-ban MecGar 15rd. mags.  Just check gunshows, pawn & gun shops or on the 'net.  The Equip. Exchange here at AR15.com is good place and the Sig forum link up above are good spots to check.  A fair price range is $55-75 for mags rating 75% & up.

I have some of the 15rnd MecGars, they are great!, Never had a FTF.  I use them as my inserted/carry mags and keep the factory mags new and pretty!  That many rounds make the 9mm super potent!
