Another vote for the M1911A1, the only one with a custom designed man-killing round. It was in constant service with American forces from Belleau Wood to Beirut, and now seeing a comeback in the MEU(SOC) pistol.

I've always liked the Browning Hi-Power. I like the 1911, but my Sig 220 is a vastly superior .45.

Three weeks ago I would have said "I've got 3 1911's and they are real weapons but when it comes to whipping it out and blastin' nothing beats a Glock" Then the Locking Block on my Glock 27 broke. [>(] God I was bummed. [>Q]
Now I have to say "When it comes down to a real weapon that will work under all conditions it's a 1911". [:|] |

What other gun its age is still a viable defensive and law enforcement weapon today? Can anyone honestly say that they are LESS well equipped with a 1911 than with a Glock? You may LIKE the Glock or Sig better. But can you honestly say a 1911 wouldnt work just as well? Now I know that there are older revolvers still in production, but except as a hideout gun they are not much use. Using a revolver in a gunfight CAN get you killed by its nature, that is the length of time it takes to reload compared to a automatic pistol, even with a speed loader. |

OK pdg45acp, I'll bite. What is a Glock "locking block?" I know there's "locking piece" on Beretta autos, but I don't know what this is in a Glock.
BTW I haven't managed to break a Glock yet in spite of years of trying. In 1911s I had a front sight fly off and broke a slide stop. I still love 1911s though, there's just something righteous about them. They are a "fine handgun," the Glock is more like a "shooting machine." |

When they were NEW 45's built by Colt, Remington Rand, and the National Armories NEVER shed pieces. They won their contract because of this, the Colt and Smith DA revolvrs- not to mention the Luger's and Mausers- did shed pieces. You either got a very old and well used .45 or a cheep clone by a fly by night company- which sadly incldes Colt anymore. |

M1911. I have a Glock 30 (.45 ACP) which I really like, but my Combat Commander is the one I keep with me at all times. It's slimmer, comfortable, and just an all-round great firearm. Wouldn't part with it for the world.

I have to say the 1911A1, but the L9 (British designatio for the Browning Hi-Power) gets a very close second. I personally prefer the L9, but I still still bow to the 1911 in .45 ACP.
You can cheer all you want about a Glock, Sig, Beretta, H&K, or whatever you prefer, but I say that they will never have the history or go through the combat trials that the 1911 and L9 did (and still do). Someone correct me if I am wrong, but isnt the Hi-Power still the most widely used military sidearm in the world? On the other hand, the 1911 and L9 do not make as good of a police sidearm because they are single action. Some people say that the DA is a must have for police. I am undecided actually. I can keep with all my friends and their DA autos (with my Hi-Power) in a quick draw contest (against targets, of course). 'nuff ramblin for now... JRB |

I have to agree with JRB L1A1 in agreeing that John Browning's creations set the standards for combat pistols as far as I'm concerned. I'd say that the 1911 design is tops, with the Hi-Power running a close second.

Well Armed Liberal, it was a COLT after all. Specifically a 1991 that I bought brand new in the box. Aforementioned stuff started breaking around the 4K round mark.
Maybe it was a "new" Colt and not a "classic" Colt and that's my problem . . . I have never broken a NORINCO 1911 I'll admit, although I have never put that many miles on one either. |

This is why that a ex-Argentine Federal Police Colt 1927- the ones that were made by Colt and shipped down, not the Sistemas that were built in Argentina- are selling for the same price here in Phoenix ($450 bucks) as a new M1991 Colt and a hundred dollars more than a Charles Dailey (or a Ruger, or a Sigma). And have you seen the blue book for a VG WWI production M1911? $600 bucks, and up depending on how low the serial numbers are and if it was "modernized" into a A1. And this isnt cause of collector value, its because these guns are still "shooting machines" that you can COUNT on to protect your life, and even if worn out can still easily be restored by the shooter himslef with over the counter parts. WIll Glocks be doing this in 2083 when they turn 100, sure, and 200 year old Colts will be right alongside. |

I have my favorite. A Remington Rand M1911A1. It speaks to me, it tells me war stories. It's been to Guadalcanal, Pelilu, Omaha Beach and The Hurtgen forest. It was at the Inchon, Old Baldy, The Punch Bowl and Heart Break Ridge. Then there was The Ashau Valley, Leatherneck Square and Hue . It rounded out it's service in Beruit and lastly on Grenada. No other pistol can match it's war record. All debate rings hollow. The M1911/M1911A1's are the greatest combat handguns, ever.

For me is 1911 in .45 I have never seen a 1911 frame do what glocks can do.....

The Glock 9mm is probably the most reliable pistol ever manufactured. The larger caliber Glocks are reliable, but just don't have the longevity of the "nines". Plus, it's one of the few pistols that can chew an endless supply of the superhot 9mm subgun ammo, and can be fired underwater with the maritime springcups installed (It is becoming a popular shark gun with scuba divers[0j]). Those stories you hear of Glock 17's and 19's going several hundred thousand rounds aren't fiction!

Out of the box, I have to vote for a Glock.
If you want something that has the history, and you pay more for it, then you have to send it to a gunsmith to make it 100% reliable, get yourself a 1911. Of course, the one you have with you when you need it is the best! |
