The Chinese and Soviet ones that I've owned both face up. Don't know about the E. German, etc.

Oh, yeah: The attachment ring functions as a fingerguard. They use their bayonets as knives and wire-cutters a lot more than as battle implements.

Designing the bayonet that way makes it more effective as a knife.
If the edge of the blade faces downward, then the ring that goes around the barrel winds up behind the spine of the blade, right where you'd want to put your thumb. If the edge of the blade faces upward, then the attachment ring goes behind the edge, right where you'd want to have a guard anyway. |

just guessing, but wouldn't it make sense that a human's upward thrust is better leveraged and therefore stronger than a downward push??? if the blade is moving towards the neck/head, wouldn't it do much more damage than if the blade was moving down from the point of insertion?

Bayonets and bayonet mounts are bad. Many innocent children have been killed by drive-by bayonettings and such.
