From your observations of others at the range, which of the following statements is closest to the truth:

1. Nearly all shooters go to great lengths to make sure they keep their configuration legal ("evil features", U.S. parts count on AK's, etc).

2. Most people don't really give a fig about all those details and no one ever gets busted for stuff like that.

Reason I ask is, I was on a plane with a guy and since I was reading Shotgun News, we got to talking about guns. He has an AR-15 and he was telling me he put a collapsable stock on it. I said, "hey, be careful" and he said basically no one really cares about stuff like that.

I'd say number 1, and for all those prowling legal eagles out there looking to get the general "word" in the gun community......NUMBER 1

Even when someone at the range ask's me if my gun is pre-ban (which it is), I politiely tell them what a loaded question that is, and that they should get in the habbit of not asking that question.

Very big #1 up here. Not so much getting caught at the range but getting in an accident on the way to or from the range and having your "illegal" rifle found, having it stolen, etc,etc. In Canada almost any crime committed with violence, weapons ,etc will almost guarantee being prohibited from owning firearms for at least 10 years. It isn't worth it. And most of the "evil" stuff IE bayo lugs and collapsable stocks don't make them shoot any better.

I'm going to go with number 1 also, just because I go to great lengths to keep my stuff legal, everyone else I know does the same. It's tricky though if your the kind of person who wants a certain firearm, but does'nt know too much about the current legislation, or what shysters dealers can be.

I would say the majority of shooters would meet the criteria for #1, but I have seen too many that do not care about the legalities to believe it is "nearly all."

I don't agree with the law and will do my best to get rid of it, but a bayonet lug of a folding stock ain't worth going to jail over.

It makes no sense to put on a collapsible stock since it doesn't shoot as well. The Denver Police Department even puts fixed stocks on their M4's for the same reason.
It is just not worth a felony.

Definitely #1.

However, I do think a lot of younger shooters (broad generalization) follow #2.

In general younger guys can't afford the prebans, but think the collapsible stock and flashhider "look cool." Plus they're at the age when they think they are invincible. I was at that age once too.

I think there is a #3 - which is people that THINK they are following the law, and don't realize that the "pre-ban" they bought at the gunshow is really a postban lower with illegal features.

Other than that, I agree with #1 - by far most people fall in that category.

#1 - I honestly don't know anyone with, nor have I ever seen a suspect illegal weapon at a range; the only thing I ever saw that might be suspect was an ad in newspaper that sounded fishy because it said "no paperwork".
