Dell starts selling $9,900 overclocked gaming PC

Dell will today begin taking orders for its "limited edition" XPS 600 Renegade quad SLI, physics engine-equipped desktop gaming rig, the computer giant said today. The kit will set you back a whopping $9,930, though that includes Dell's 30in LCD monitor.

The XPS 600 Renegade comes in a custom-painted case inside which sit four GeForce 7900 GPUs each with 512MB of video memory ready to run games at 2,560 x 1,600. The unit also features an Ageia PhysX processor on which games can offload all their complex physics calculations to free up the CPU - a dual-core Pentium D Extreme Edition "factory overclocked" to 4.26GHz, no less - for stuff like artificial intelligence work.

Dell's also put a SoundBlaster X-Fi Fatal1ty sound card in the box, which also houses a Western Digital 160GB, 10,000rpm Raptor hard drive and - in case you run out of room - a second WD HDD, a 400GB, 7,200rpm job. There's 2GB of dual-channel 667MHz DDR 2 connected to the CPU via an Nvidia nForce 4 SLI chipset.

All this, plus the 30in 3007WFP monitor, comes to $9,930, but Dell said it has a range of lesser spec'd machines for gamers on a tighter budget. It also said it was offering the Ageia physics controller on its regular XPS 600 and XPS 400 desktops in versions priced at $2,039 and $1,239, respectively.

Dell said it has begun selling the XPS 600 Renegade, but at the time of writing the machine had yet to appear as a purchase option on its US website.

I can build my own for way less,  Heck, I built the one I am typing this on for about a couple hundred bux.

I know.  I gave my last box (Athlon XP 3200+) to my son when I moved.  Haven't had a Windoze box in 7 months.  Time to start spec'ing out a game machine again.

how many games even support the Phisysics accelarator.

Its not like you even need on nowdays, with cards like the X1900XTX that have plenty of power to spare.

why not go with a dual soket AMD board and put two dual core processores in it.

It will be in a garage sale in 5 years.

Personally, I don't like Dells.  My high school ran Dells.  Very problematic machines.  YMMV of course.

Speak for yourself bud...

I could build a quad core box with 8 way SLI and phase change cooling for way less than that. Top it off with a 3TB RAID 5 setup, a better monitor and a stereo that would make you cry and it would STILL cost less than that.

(In two years it will be worth $100 on ebay)

Couldn't possibly be because the students constantly fuck them up, now could it?  


This box will be a pretty amazing box, but yeah, if you can find a board that supports 4 video boards in SLI, you could build a box for probably quite a bit less than ANY oem box.  

It used to be that Dell made good performance desktops, then we got into the low price cheapo desktop race, and kinda lost touch with the performance end.  Maybe we'll be getting back into it.

I've had my Dell Dimension 2600 for over 2 years now. Not one problem at all. If you know how to use a computer, it will generally continue to run for many years.

A quick check tells me that there is currently no games that support the PhysX PPU. Meaning that it does nothing but sit in the machine and look pretty.

Meaning that I could build an AMD box that would stomp the crap out of it in every game out there for about $2000.

True... for now.   Technology evolves.  I bet in ~2-3 years, the PhysX type device will be commonplace, and games will be written to take advantage of it... not to mention take advantage of multiple core CPUs and conventions like SLI.

Bleh… Intel is not going to catch AMD until conroe which is due out sometime in June or July. The PhysX PPU is going to retail for something like $200. Nvidia is going to put a PPU on their next generation boards… Due out in July. (What a coinqydink)

So, sometime July(ish) the supa dupa Dell boxen will look like an antique.

LONG before any games start supporting a PPU.
