Hi guys,

I am in the process of installing a single point sling loop. The damn castle nut is giving me a very hard time. Is there a trick to getting this thing loose? Would WD-40 help at all?

Any advice will be appreciated.

My bit of advice: get a better one than that.

I have one that's not stamped. It's a bit more 'spensive but worth it in leverage alone IMHO.

When you get the gun reassembled to your liking, get the nut staked so it won't work loose.

I used a little blue loc-tite on mine.

Take it from someone who works on old diesel machinery, Kroil is THE SHIT for getting things unstuck.

Yeah, I have a decent wrench. I'll try some Kroil.

The rifle is brand new if that makes any difference.

Also if you have a heat gun try heating that area up slightly. If there's Loctite Blue on the threads, heat will unfreeze it.

If it is peened it is going to be very difficult to remove. You may have to pull out the Dremel.

So did I. When it came loose, I ahd a friend fix it. Permanently.

Sounds like the nut is staked on or somebody used Red Loctite.

Red Loctite will require heat to remove

Check to see if it's a staked nut (look at the indentations on the castle nut where it touches the end plate - if material from the endplate has been pushed into the notches then the nut is staked). If it's staked then a dremel really helps (it's ok you'll be throwing out that endplate anyway).

OH and be VERY careful with the little takedown-pin-captive spring! I bent mine up a bit and had to stuff it in the tunnel since I didn't have a replacement... Works fine, but I should buy a new one and replace it...

Steps to removing Castle nut that Grape Ape has torqued on with an impact wrench at the factory:

1. Order a new one from your favorite vendor.

2. Wait for it to arrive.

3. Dremel the motherfv&*&!er off.

4. Install new nut.

Simple, Painless procedure.

If it's staked a wrench sucks IMHO.

secure the rifle and get a punch and a hammer. A few good whacks and it will shear off the staking. I have no idea how it's done with a wrench when it is staked all to hell.
