I was flipping through some back copies of Rifle last night and read one of editor columns about the survey they did. Now this is a magazine that probably has more hunter-types versus Arfcommer-types read it. I was really suprised to read the survey had shown that on average people owned 66 guns. This included rifles, shotgus and handguns. This really go me to thinking so I counted up what I have, I think I got them all although I did keep remembering ones stuck in odd places, and I came up a bit short of 66. My final count, barring finding something else, is 29. So, how many do you have?

At last count, 57, 9 short of average. Most of them were my grandfathers though.

Yeah I was a bit shocked myself. My wife on the other hand was not even slightly amused and told me not to get any ideas!! |
Hell I've got over 45 Lugers alone! I would guess my gun count would be in the 150+ range!

I did an inventory a while back and came up with 17, but this includes a couple of cap and ball revolvers. It doesn’t include a Mongolian Bow, two swords, a spear, a crossbow, and several BB guns/Paintball guns.
Some of my friends wonder why I have so many (and I don’t have nearly enough) and I explain that it’s les than one a year since I turned 18. Most of my stuff cost less than $400 new. $400 dollars a year isn’t too much to spend on a hobby. |

I went through a consolidation of sorts a few years ago and sold off all the guns I didn't use. I put the money from those guns back into other guns I would use or high-end accessories like optics.

+1 I bet most have 3 max. Seriously. |
I used to own just over 31, but now I own somewhere between 15-30.
I think I'm going to take them all with me to the lake tonight for a small ice fishing trip... |
I call BS on 66 being the average. I would bet even an average of 10 is high.

I still have student loans that need to be paid first. edit: <---Post 666 right there |
That does seem a lot. Maybe many of the curio guys really bring up the average.
After checking my database, I do have more than I thought. |
I'm doing farily well. Bought my first gun 5 years ago, I'm up over 40 now. Still well short of the average though.
There ain't no farking way the average gun owner has 66 guns.
Quite hoggin' 'em all. I need to get me one. |
An average of 66??? Heyall Naw!!! There is no way the average gun owner owns 66 guns. I don't even own that many, and I am a friggin addict. Even when I finish getting my CCR and start going broke from the newfound freedom to buy old military rifles, I doubt I will have more than 50 or 60 guns. I would estimate the average to most likely be 5 or under. There is no way in hell the average gun owner has 66 guns. |

For all you bullshit callers it was in this issue. I just sent a email to them to see if the survey is up on the web. I understand the skepticism as I think its an enormous number too. I'm just repeating what I read. I don't know how small their sample was, it couldn't be too large since its a niche publication and there may have been some exaggeration but it certainly got my curiosity up. I see that over half that have already responded have more than 16 guns Half of those more than 31.
I notice several of you saying the average gun owner. This was the average for the READERS of Rifle magazine that responded to their survey. |
I don't doubt you are quoting the number properly, but there is no way the number is correct. I own 40 guns at the moment, and I am WAAAAAAAAAAY above the average fellow. |

AR15 .45 .45c 9mm 12 Ga Looking to get another rifle or two & that should be it for me. Don't need anymore. |

What is all this "need" stuff you people keep saying???? "Need" has nothing to do with it. Certain ones just CALL to you!! Current list of things calling out to me: Walther PP (currently on its way...) Yugo SKS No. 4 Enfield 1903A3 Springfield Finnish M39 Mosin-Nagant rifles (all of them) M1 Garand FAL clone M1 carbine Swiss K-31 rifle German K98 Yugo M24 1917 Enfield A3 AR carbine S&W 27 4" bbl S&W 28 6" bbl S&W 29 8.5" bbl S&W 13 4" bbl and 2" bbl S&W 19 2.5" bbl Browning .25 autos (all of them) FN .25 autos (all of them) Colt .25 autos (all of them) German Walther PPKs (all of them) Nagant revolver Mauser C96 And a hell of a lot more that I can't list because I am getting wood just trying to think about them all. I will stop "needing" guns when I own one of everything. Until then they call out to me with the siren song... |

AR15 Mini 14 Mosin Nangent Czech VZ24 8mm M1 Carbine- National Postal Meter oops I forgot my 870 Im also building an AK but hey, Im not even old enough to buy a rifle yet. |
Considering the target audience - gun ENTHUSIASTS - 66 may be right.
If I had more money, 66 would be a nice start. |
Maybe I'm a gun snob but all but one of my guns were well over $1000. I'm in college now so there is no way I can afford 66K of guns. In the future I am interested in buying high quality items that aren't particularly common.

Whoops! I forgot to count my flintlock pistol. That puts me into the 5-15 category! |
36 at last count. Mostly milsurps, but a few modern weapons too.
