dead or alive, for just one day, who would that person be?

For me, it would have to be my mother. She died four years ago. I'd give anything to spend one more day with her. :(

last night i hung out with Joe Strummer, of the Clash, perhaps one of the greatest political thinkers of the modern era, so he's out...

Thomas Jefferson, greatest political mind EVER...

or now that you mention it, i really would give anything to see my father again, even for a moment, he passed on while i was 3500 miles away.

Amen, brother. We'll see our loved ones again.

On a lighter note, I would like to hang out with Elvis. I want to see if his brain was really abducted by aliens or if he's working on a road crew in Memphis.

I'd be between the following:

1.  Thomas Jefferson-  I admire his ideals, and I'd love to be able to explain to him what's currently going on with gun control laws and ask his opinion.

2.  George Washington-  Do I really need to explain this one?

3.  Trent Reznor-  I'm sure McUZI might disagree with me, but he's a musical genius.  I consider him to be the best that's out there right now, and one of the best musicians of all time.

4.  Ronald Reagan-  Before his illness, of course.  To meet the man who destroyed communism and who returned the US from the financial mess of the 1970's...  Wow.

5.  Niccolo Machiavelli-  Like it or not, this man had the knowledge necessary to run the world.

as i understood the question, it meant a real, as in not made up, figment of imagination. person. so that leaves god, jesus, buddha, yahweh, etc. out. Guess Carlos Hathcock would have been extremely fun to hang with. Just think of the things he could teach you. Or maybe Charlie Manson. Not out of respect or anything like that, just to get a look into that crazy mind of his. Or maybe even Tim McVeigh, just to kick his ass around awhile. now that would be fun.

Jay,

To a certain extent you are correct. However, God and Jesus are not make believe people.
God created this earth and sent his son to die so that you may have everlasting life.

I don't understand why anyone would forsake him when he gave so much for you. I'm not pushing my beliefs off on anyone (just for the record) and for your sake, I hope you are right...however, I know in my heart this isn't correct.

The alternative isn't very inviting if you ask me... especially when I know what he has done for me!

bwilder - i meant no offence to anyone or their beliefs. but just as you have yours, i have mine. i am truly sorry if i offended you or anyone else. that was not my intention, although i am sure it appeared that way. not to get into any religous debate, but i beleive when you die, you die. thats it, nothing else. IMHO, heaven and hell were made up in order to "scare" people into living a good life, because as human nature is, no one does anything for anyone else without some kind of reward, for the most part. Heaven was developed because of the need to beleive that dear old uncle mike or grandma is not really rotting in the ground like week old hamburger. instead, they are waiting for us in a better place. i beleived in all the god-related stuff for 28 years, up to about 1 year ago. for some reason, overnight i changed. sorry if i went on to far with this. we all have different beleifs. you like red and i like blue. we can still be friends though.

I would also like to meet and hang out with Einstein. It would be great to get him drunk and figure out how in the heck did he come up with some of those equations? I figure if I was in an "altered state" i.e. drunk, I would understand the reasoning behind some of those equations.

A fair and reasonable question you ask. The fact is that Jesus Christ was most definitely a "real" person. His life is recorded not only in the Bible but in the contemporary works of the Jewish historian Josephus, Roman writings including Pontius Pilate's report to his boss in Rome about how he had supressed a Jewish uprising by allowing the execution of a Jew named Jesus who claimed to be the King of the Jews. Even the Muslim Koran includes detailed descriptions of the physical life of Jesus. The fact that Jesus was a real person is not at all in doubt. Modern archeology has uncovered overwhelming evidence that the events and places recorded in the Biblical accounts along with other contemporary non- biblical documents did in fact occur. The only thing some dispute is Jesus claim of deity ("I and the Father are one" John 10:30 and "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father", John 14:9). The miracles of Jesus are well recorded and cannot be explained even by modern science. The events of Jesus' life fulfilled nearly a hundred very specific prophecies (ref:http://www.capecod.net/~jgarvey/messanic.html. The last of these prophecies was written 700 years before Jesus was born. A secular mathematician calculated that the odds of having any one person fulfill all of the prophecies were billions to one against anyone other than Jesus. The last of these prophecies was written 700 years before Jesus was born. Significantly, in the Koran, even Mohammed states that Jesus "was without sin". On a more personal note, Christianity is the only religion that claims that it's God died for your benefit, rather than demanding continual sacrifice to an insatiable god. All other god-figures of world religions like Mohammed, Buddha, etc. are known to have lived and died and none made any claim to being resurrected from their death. So all in all, the evidence weighs heavily in favor of Jesus being who he said he was, and being on the mission he was sent to fulfill. Keep asking honest questions, have an open mind and be honest with yourself and you will discover that "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free", John 8:32.

**I have included Biblical references here not to browbeat ANYONE, simply to make it easy for the honestly interested to look them up for themselves.

Stephen Hawking.

He wrote a book titled, A Brief History Of Time.

I don't know how many physics fans are here but I'm a physics student and this book puts the really abstract theoretical stuff into laymans terms.  One of my professors used it as an aid in class.

Hawking is the Einstein of his generation.  There is some groundbreaking stuff happening in the realm of theoretical physics right now and he's right at the top of it!
