I've been spending a fair amount of time with my DSA FAL lately, and was thinking of going in the other direction, a mini-poodleshooter, for a little variety.

I've been tossing the idea around of adding an IMI UZI model A or B, probably in 9mm, into the ol' gunsafe. I see them in good condition for ~$1100, to ~$1300 NIB. Mags and accessories are readily available. Any feedback on these?

The 9mm Colts are a bit above that $ range. I already have plenty of other ARs in .223. Yeah, I know-Olympic makes pistol caliber uppers. No thanks. I have "ZERO" interest in any Special Weapons widgets, and don't care to drop $3,000 on an HK. If I think on this any longer, I'll probably talk myself out of it...

Too bad NY is so socialist, a suppressed 300 whisper AR15 upper would be the ticket.

Why no interest in Special Weapons?
My SW-5 functions very well as long as I load  27 in the 30 round mags.  Functions fine in 10 degree weather.  I friend of mine has used many H&K's and didn't notice it was a copy until I mentioned it :)

Hi Gator! I have followed the saga of Todd Bailey of Special Weapons quite closely on [url]www.hk91.com[/url]. It appears, that aside from his being, shall we say, a "character," the  SW5's have had a few quality control problems. I'm glad that your gun works well. Mainly, I choose not to do business with a person of Mr. Bailey's character. The second reason is magazine cost and parts/accessory availability. I simply don't like HK products enough to pay the big price. Also, there is some question just how compatible SW5's are with some true HK parts. Thirdly, I can buy a preban UZI carbine cheaper than a  postban SW5, with magazines at a fraction of the cost of HK mags, which leads to, Fourthly, I don't believe UZIs require a 200 round breakin period which the SW5 requires (if you are lucky!). Nah, no "Special Weapons" for me...I have read too many "my SW5 jams"  posts to go down that road.

I sold my Uzi carbine not too long ago. It was a great gun. Why did I sell it? Too heavy for a 9mm carbine for one thing. I was thinking of the SW5 myself but decided against for the same reasons you cited. I have got my eye on the Kel-Tec sub 9. I hear nothing but good things about them and you can get one that takes Glock mags which is nice if you have Glock 17 as I do. But if you want the subgun look it may not appeal to you.

I own an IMI Mod A, and a postban Norinco 320, with a US parts kit to make it 922r compliant, and allows for a pistol grip.

I believe that the MP-5 is a damn fine weapon (I have never shot a semi, but I have shot a full) but I think it gets too much credit over the UZI not because of it's inherent quality, but because of it's German manufacture. Israeli weapons are some of the finest on earth, but not everybody knows that, so they go "Quality-German-Manufactured" MP-5 instead.

I truly love my UZI's, and assuming $$ wasn't a consideration, wouldn't trade them for SW-5's.

Yeah, one of the turnoffs on a Model A or B is the weight. Over 8 lbs empty. The miniUZI partially addresses this, but of course is quite a bit more cash and less common. If NY were class 3, a full auto UZI would rock, but a semi? Tough call. The Israelis must like heavy guns. I have shotguns almost as light as the Desert Eagle (oK, within a couple of lbs!)

Get the Model A as long as it's genuine IMI.
I have one and it's heavy sure, but rock solid reliable.
I even have a Rem. SP10 with a "Slug" barrel I bought from some dude on the internet...

Why not just get a Colt 9mm conversion kit?  Less than what you are talking about spending for the UZI, you already know the drill and you can use cheap uzi mags.

Hi Beowulf. It is my understanding that the 9mm conversions require changing/modifying the .223 hammer, and bolts and sear blocks are incompatible (both of my blue label Colts have em, THANKS, Colt!). By the time I bought a new lower, I'd probably be in the Uzi ballpark. Nah. I'll probably just stick with .223 and .308. Now, Tony's Sledgehammer uppers do kinda look neat, however.

I never understood subguns. An M4 has a lot more power, easier to hit with, and is a much better value. Most of the world's militaries dropped subguns right after WWII. The rifle calibre is so much more potent.
